Hi all - my covid results are in. Those people in the labs are working during the holidays - bless them - totally. I am negative and do not have covid. I am super glad about that and that is my happy new year present to me. Covid negative. Yay! What a huge relief!

I had a very quiet new year here at the ranch. I got some great food from this local restaurant - Rick and Ann's and was going to eat a lot of that but my appetite is really down since I have been sick so I did not eat much really. Here is what was on my menu -

-stuffed mushrooms
-beef stew
-bread pudding with caramel sauce

It came cold and I had to heat it up here at home. I started with the mushrooms and they gave me 8 of those but I had 4 and did not want to eat too many. I followed the instructions and they came out perfect and were truly delicious. Nice tasty bites there. So those kind of filled me up so I was not that hungry anymore so when it was time for the stew - I did not eat that much and then did not get to the pudding at all. So I am saving most of this for the weekend. It was all delicious but I think my appetite is down from being sick and I am eating less. I hope to work on this over the next few days.

I hope you all had a great New Year's Eve and celebrated safely and in style or in your jammies (like I did). I was here snuggling with my cat, Bear. Happy New Year!

It is a beautiful day here in sunny California. Slightly cool and sunny. I took a walk this morning first thing. My friend M**** and I like to walk on Saturday mornings and talk on the phone. She lives on the other side of the country and we can keep up-to-date that way. It is nice and we both get exercise. We took a little break from it for some weeks but now that it is Spring we can get back to it and do our weekly walk. It was nice this morning. I chose to do an easier, level, walk. I usually do a hill walk up to the historic hotel in Berkeley but chose to do some streets near my house and not be so strenuous. It was just good to be out there walking so I took it easy and got some steps in. It was not too daunting and when I feel up to it - I can do the hilly walk. I will get to that later.

So my car - it is not good news. The transmission service did not fix the problem so they have to see what needs to be done. Either a rebuild or a used transmission. The tech thought a rebuilt transmission. That can cost some money so I have to see what it will be and see if it is worth it for this car. I love the car - it is fun and peppy to drive. I am saving my stimulus funds towards this and will see what happens. Thank you, Joe Biden.

Seems like you go along and something has to happen to derail you - something always comes up. I am still dealing with vet bills for both Teddy and Bear but I have the payment schedule set for those and will be able to get those paid off before the medical credit card starts to charge interest. So that is good. Very glad about that. I did the numbers last night. I had thought I needed to use the stimulus funds for that but I don't have to. So that works. It helps to plan things and it makes me feel better to have a plan.

So that is me this week - dealing with the car and financial things. I have Monday and Tuesday off this week - they suggested we take time off during Spring Break so I did. I am doing some medical things - blood tests and mammogram that I have put off due to the pandemic. Better get those done and I will go in for my check up once I have those done. So getting that done.

Anyhoo - that is it for me - I am getting a burger tonight - at True Burger in Oakland, CA. The deliciousness. I love a good burger.

Hope you are well there. Stay safe and healthy.

PS - I am considering getting a paid account on DW here and wonder if anyone has one - trying to see if it is worth it. I am wanting more icons here and have been posting more. Let me know what you think - let me know if you pay and if you find it is worth it. They won't let you add icons to a free account.

Tomorrow!

Got my appointment reminder to my email tonight. I was worried my appointment would be canceled but it was not. The mission is a go for tomorrow. Pfizer vaccine second dose. Yes. Very happy about it. My friend, J**** has an appointment on the same day so we are going to go together. They don't seem too worried about what time people show up so we think it will be ok. Soon I will be fully immunized for covid19. It takes some weeks to get to full protection so will still need to be careful. I also still think I will be careful even with the vaccine. Not going to stop wearing masks when I go out and all that.

I love Fridays. I got some things done at work and went out a bit today. Went out in the morning to the bagel place in Oakland, House of Bagels and bought some bagels for the weekend. Got some cream cheese too. Also stopped at Colonial Donuts which is right up the street and had me a donut. So good. So that was fun. Then this afternoon, I went out to Lakeshore in Oakland with my friend, J**** and we looked in store windows and got a hotdog at Top Dog. We have been talking about Top Dog for months and finally got one. It was delicious. I got a bratwurst. Yum. Are you finding the pandemic is all about the food? Today was about food for me? I wanted to eat what I really wanted today. Some days are like that and today was like that.

So tomorrow. Very exciting and will report on those side effects. I guess that is different for everyone. Will see how I do.

Hope all is well with you and they say those stimulus payments might hit this weekend. Who knows?

So for dinner, we used the second of our coupon deals - this one from Living Social. We had Ethiopian food. I have never had this and it was quite a good experience. You don't get any plates or utensils here. They serve the food one one big plate, kind of like a buffet thing of all the delicacies and then you eat it with this very flat, spongy bread which is absorbent. What I did was use the bread to pick up the food - I took small pieces of the bread and wrapped it around the meat or veggies and then dipped it into the sauces. Total win on this. We ordered what I consider to be the "beginner's special" - we did a veggie sampler and a meat sampler. The food is kind of mild, yet flavorful and spiced at the same time. Good flavor yet not overly spicy as in hot. I really enjoyed the food. We got a pastry, meat appetizer and finished the meal with a baklava. Below is a picture of the samplers which were all served together on one plate.

Tomorrow we are going to the Golden Gate Bridge, Sausalito and then on a harbor cruise sail boat trip at sunset. Lots happening then. Woo.

We went to the Claremont Hotel and ate at the Paragon Restaurant. I used my gift certificate which I won in a raffle at work. We ate loads of food and paid practically nothing for it. We tipped very well on what we would have paid, had we been paying but we didn't pay because I had the gift cert. Am I making sense? Anyhoo. Free lunch at the fancy place!

Here is a pic of the historical hotel.

Then we saw the Dark Knight Rises. That was totally worth a second look in the theatre. [livejournal.com profile] khylea had not seen it yet and we had coupons for that too. Winning all around.

Cheers to all.

Tonight I went to an event planners dinner on Commodore Cruise Ships. They have these sessions so that we can sample the goods and see what they have to offer for events, meetings and gatherings. Lordy, we had the following for the buffet:

-prime rib
-london broil
-champagne chicken
-seasonal veggies
-potatoes
-rice
-caesar salad
-fresh rolls
-butter - perfect and spreadable
-two kinds of dessert - cheese cake and chocolate mousse cake
-coffee and all sorts of beverages

-glass of champagne as you entered and met the owner.

It was fun but I ate too much. I am eating broth tomorrow to make up for being little miss piggy. I am trying to think about how I can have events on the boats. So fun. I have been on their cruises for 4th of July and they are really fun and the service is excellent.

I think I will go pass out now. Cheers! Perks of the profession! Or occupational hazard.

Happy birthday, Jaiden_s! Go you!

Fresh brewed chamomile tea, let it cool to just about room temperature and then ice it (as in iced tea). I had iced (mint) chamomile tea at a restaurant and it was delicious and recreated it at home. It is a nice night time cold tea drink that won't keep you up til all hours. Most iced tea is caffeinated black tea and will keep you awake. Today I had a friend over for dinner and TV show and made a small pitcher of the tea and she loved it. She cannot drink caffeine so that worked well. I also use this agave liquid sweetner (just a tad) that I got at Trader Joe's for a hint of sweet (hardly any).

Just a little tip that I thought I would pass along.

I thought I would post. Wow. A moment to post. Heh.

So this week it was an interesting week at work. It was the week where I saved everyone's *ss. I kid you not. People got in trouble and I had to bail them out. Room nightmares, facilities people being real sticky wickets, events almost collapsing for other departments. I had to use highly tuned negotiating skills to pull other departments in my division out of the doo doo. And I did it. I really did. *gold star on my forehead* And what did I get for my efforts? A sandwich and a cookie...*giggles* Hey...I did not have to buy lunch that day. That is something. This week my stream team went forward without tech support and we did great. Me and A***, my pal from the Communications and Events Office have decided that we no longer need tech support for our webcasts and it is more fun without them. Plus we got the set up done faster and had more time to drink our coffee before the meeting started --BONUS. All in all a successful week but very stressful. I have Monday off. I so happy about that.

What else? I think I will bullet:
-I got a leather chair for 25.00 on craigslist. It is worth 1000.00 according to consignment guy. I am stoked about that. I pick it up tomorrow. Best described as a therapists chair and super comfy. Woot.
-I went to a really cool vegan restaurant last night in Berkeley (north) called Cafe Gratitude. The food was super good, great sauces and all healthy and stuff. The veggies were delish and one of the best caesar salads I have ever had. I bought this cool green bowl (fiesta ware style) for my morning oatmeal. Their tag line is "What are you grateful for?" and the servers ask you that when they take your order. You seriously have to answer the question. Kind of a cool, oombie goombie place.

That is all I have here. I have been having fun exploring my hard drive for images and putting together a fall line up of graphics and I might go out for lunch today. I am chilling.

I hope you are having a good weekend. Cheers to all and what are YOU grateful for? Comments on that are welcome.

Someone says in the supermarket (to the butcher):

'I was just admiring your sausage!'

And your mind does all sorts of crazy things with that and you have to stifle the laugh. I think the butchers got a good chuckle at that. I heard them talking after the lady left. All sorts of "sausage" jokes there.

I tell you. I write too much naughty fiction or something. LOL.

I have been home this week with a bad back. I am finally starting to feel better now and will return to work tomorrow. I am so far behind there but when you have to rest, you have to rest. I did have the sick time accrued so I am good there. I overdid it helping my friends move last weekend. Oopsie.

I did have a really nice meal today at the French cafe, Bateau---beef bourgignon. Really nice. I had never had it before and it was very nicely done here. Thoroughly enjoyed that and at every last bite. Clean plate club, me!

That is all I have. I hope everyone is well and doing fine this week. April 1 tomorrow!

So I don't know if you realize this but I live in California AND I work for the state university. Double whammy and financial crisis. I have had a pay cut. This means I am looking for ways to save money. Call me cheap, call me frugal or call me thrifty, I don't care what you call me but I am GOING to cut my expenses and tell you all about it too.

Here is what I have done recently to alleviate the bottom line here:

-bring lunch
-cut my soda pop consumption on meals out (at 2.50 - 3.00 a drink, adds up)
-no more lattes. Lattes cost 3.60 - 4.00. I get regular coffee (1.50) or bring my own (0.00)
-I dyed my own hair (4.69 for the dye). I usually spend 75.00 on that at the salon.
-I switched to Supercuts for my haircut (20.00 including tip versus 50.00 at the spendy salon)
-cook more and eat out less
-menu plan so I am throwing out less food.
-shop the sales - food and clothing and other things
-have clothes mended as opposed to buying new pants (I just did that and saved 40.00)
-consign clothes and purchase on consignment
-bring my own food to the movies - lord, do they charge too much

On my hair. You might think it would not look as good but, I am observant and I noted how my hair stylist applied the color. Using his technique, I got an even shade and I used a permanent color so it really did cover my grey. I have gotten nothing but complements on it, so much so that people ask, "Where do you go?" Heh. With the cut, I went to Supercuts with a very specific idea in mind of what I wanted and showed them a picture of the cut I wanted. This works with them. Do not describe verbally what you want them to do...and do not ask them to interpret that. SHOW. You will get exactly what you want and they can cut hair there. The stylist I got had 20 years of experience with hair and was moonlighting for extra money. I will go back to him.

The rest works for me and going out to eat must become a luxury or real treat. Not a routine but an exceptional thing. I am getting better at putting together nice meals and really enjoying what I cook. The key is effective shopping and planning.

/frugal fanny.

This morning I had some nice shabbos toast with my challah bread (the sweet braided loaf) with butter and the unsweeted strawberry jam khylea sent me for crimmas. It was fabulous. Jam does not need sugar and you can really taste the fruit this way.

I am going to see Avatar again today. Yips.

This was an update, imagine that?

Today's Post (3)

A really delicious home cooked lunch (breakfast).

Scrambled eggs, sausage and an english muffin with home made jam.

Simple flavors can taste the best. They are distinguishable and delicious. I am thankful for the means to make, ability to put this on the table and the taste of this.

It is at this point in the Hanukkah week that the menorah is covered with wax and you have to dig the previous night's candles out of the holders. This is where it gets tough, dear readers. You have to work for it now. :P

The Hanukkah saga continues. Da da da! *cue ominous music and yes I had wine with lunch!*

Tonight's candles...or both sides now... )

Other news...

Today one of our Dean's took the staff to Chez Panisse, the quintissential California cuisine restaurant in North Berkeley. This was started and is still run by Alice Waters, famous for her cooking in season and with very fresh ingredients. My mom is really into her cook book and bio right now and I tell you, the flavors and food were incredible there. Pumpkin soup, goat cheese with the fresh greens on the salad, bittersweet chocolate ice cream for dessert. Just subtle, exquisite flavors. I really enjoyed it.

Tonight we have a holiday get together at the house and will go there in a little while. I got cream puffs to share with my neighbors. Should be fun. I cannot remember if we are doing a gift exchange so I am bringing one just in case.

Thank you to [livejournal.com profile] fablest for the lovely card. Yours is on the way and to [livejournal.com profile] aglarien1 for the wonderful gift. I am gobsmacked and will really enjoy that. *huggles*

Enough of a ramble for Toosday. Night all.

That make life grand.

This morning, I was eating my cereal at my desk at work and the doorbell rings. Mild huff at the inconvenience of getting up in the middle of my brekky and there at the door is my old friend BV. He used to work at the Division years ago and moved to Hawaii and onto better things. We sat around shooting it for a while and I got the update. I just think about how far he has come. I mean, this guy was working here and living out of his car, showering at the gym and he is doing great...courted by a terrific company in SoCal. I am just so happy for him. I remember how close to the edge he used to live and now he has wife, family and ample means. He reminded me that I used to help get him clothes and food and that he never forgot that. We held him together back then and now he is great. Gosh. Getting teary just thinking about it. Wow. He is on Facebook so we are going to keep in touch there. Awesome.

Then on my way home, I realize that I have had a whole in the pocket of my favorite coat for about a year now. This is my JJILL coat and it has a faux fur collar and I loves it. So as I approach F*** the Tailor, light dawns and I figure out that I can have him sew the pocket for a small fee and it will be all fixed like new...well better than new as he is a really good tailor. The seam would hold and the coat might disintegrate around it... So, in I go and he examines the coat in that critical way he has...

"Coat has no lining, this is good. Can do right now."

Magic to my ears and it will cost two dollars. Two dollars that I don't have...so he tells me I am good for it and can pay him next time I am by. He did not want me to run it on my credit card as the fees would cost more than he would make. I thought that was nice of him and I will stop by this weekend to pay. Coat fixed. I so happy.

Oh and turkey enchiladas at the deli. Yayus. Ready for me to take home.

It's the small things. Happy weekend all.

I have been sitting here eating jalapeno, cheese puffs for like 45 minutes. I feel ick. I love these things but enough is enough. They have the blue cheese, I love the blue cheese but everything in moderation. This is not moderate.

So as a follow up to the political stuff I posted earlier in the week. The rent control measure that I was jabbering on about got voted down, meaning that rent control is alive and well here. I am sooo pleased with that and it reinvigorates my faith in humanity and the political process. Makes that canvassing I did totally worth it.

My Ardor in August is out of control. 7800 words. Augh. No signing of ending. I will make it stop. He he he. Elves run amok.

Tonight I made a really cool icon that I am pretty happy with. Posting it for your pleasure. Coming soon to a comm hear you:

Graphical feature: Anime color

Anime Color

I like it. I played with opacity on the text thing. Fading that for the animated thing. Woo. I like to try a new way of doing things. I would like it to be smoother. But the chickie on the icon is radical. I love all the color there.

Well. La la la. Here I am on Saturday and the doo is done. Went to the new place and got color and stuff. I got it cut WICKED short, as they would say in Boston. Took one of those self portraits with the camera-phone thingie for you all to see. So here it is.

Taking me a little getting used to... )

That is all for now. There is some big faire in the park here so I am vacating the premises. It is all loud and shit. Heading for the hills. I think we are going for Chinese food later in Oakland's China Town. Should be nice. The food is always good there.

See ya.

So it was a typical mid-week blah until I decided to go to the Roach Coach. Yep, that's right. The divey little mexican stand in front of my building here at work. They have kick ass food and awesome enchiladas verde with no payback later. Mm mm mm.

I am loving this Basque thing....

Post over Sunday morning coffee. Ahh the marine layer. Houston, we have a fog bank. It is rolling off the hills and it is nice and cold right now. I love that. Our own natural air conditioning. It did not really get hot here yesterday. It was in the low 80's so not that bad.

My meanderings yesterday and other things... )

Thanks for listening to my long ramble. *snort* I thought this would be a short post.

I put that all behind a cut since it got longer than I expected! :)
