We went to the Claremont Hotel and ate at the Paragon Restaurant. I used my gift certificate which I won in a raffle at work. We ate loads of food and paid practically nothing for it. We tipped very well on what we would have paid, had we been paying but we didn't pay because I had the gift cert. Am I making sense? Anyhoo. Free lunch at the fancy place!

Here is a pic of the historical hotel.

Then we saw the Dark Knight Rises. That was totally worth a second look in the theatre. [livejournal.com profile] khylea had not seen it yet and we had coupons for that too. Winning all around.

Cheers to all.

Hotcakes Bakes
Los Angeles, CA

Restaurant review

Basic info:
Cost per cupcake is 3.00.

Hotcakes Bakes Bakery won Cupcakes Wars in 2009 so that is their claim to fame. They made our list of cupcakes to try while I was in Los Angeles.

I have to say, I was underwhelmed. First off, the cupcake was served very cold from the fridge. Frosting cold, cake cold...it was cold. I really prefer my cupcakes room temperature. They taste better and the texture of the frosting is just way better. The bite of this was hard and just no fun. This fact alone ruined the cupcake for me and I pretty much could not get past that. Cold cupcake = yech tooey.

I sampled their coconut cupcake to compare it to the one that I had from Sprinkles. This was plain vanilla with a cream cheese frosting. It was smaller than the Sprinkles one and no lemon in this one. I honestly think my cupcake had spent a good long time in the fridge and the flavor was not there. Hands down, Sprinkles beat out this cupcake. Lackluster to say the least. I am sure some people think this is a good cupcake but not me. The flavor would have come through a bit better if it had not been chilled.

Anyways. Worth a mention. I did, of course, finish the cupcake.

Over all rating:
Fair.

Recommend:
Not as much as Sprinkles.

I thought I would post. Wow. A moment to post. Heh.

So this week it was an interesting week at work. It was the week where I saved everyone's *ss. I kid you not. People got in trouble and I had to bail them out. Room nightmares, facilities people being real sticky wickets, events almost collapsing for other departments. I had to use highly tuned negotiating skills to pull other departments in my division out of the doo doo. And I did it. I really did. *gold star on my forehead* And what did I get for my efforts? A sandwich and a cookie...*giggles* Hey...I did not have to buy lunch that day. That is something. This week my stream team went forward without tech support and we did great. Me and A***, my pal from the Communications and Events Office have decided that we no longer need tech support for our webcasts and it is more fun without them. Plus we got the set up done faster and had more time to drink our coffee before the meeting started --BONUS. All in all a successful week but very stressful. I have Monday off. I so happy about that.

What else? I think I will bullet:
-I got a leather chair for 25.00 on craigslist. It is worth 1000.00 according to consignment guy. I am stoked about that. I pick it up tomorrow. Best described as a therapists chair and super comfy. Woot.
-I went to a really cool vegan restaurant last night in Berkeley (north) called Cafe Gratitude. The food was super good, great sauces and all healthy and stuff. The veggies were delish and one of the best caesar salads I have ever had. I bought this cool green bowl (fiesta ware style) for my morning oatmeal. Their tag line is "What are you grateful for?" and the servers ask you that when they take your order. You seriously have to answer the question. Kind of a cool, oombie goombie place.

That is all I have here. I have been having fun exploring my hard drive for images and putting together a fall line up of graphics and I might go out for lunch today. I am chilling.

I hope you are having a good weekend. Cheers to all and what are YOU grateful for? Comments on that are welcome.

Here is an interesting thing a co-worker shared with me from the NY Times.

100 Things Restaurant Staffers Should Never Do (Parts 1 and 2)
By BRUCE BUSCHEL

Samples:

1. Do not let anyone enter the restaurant without a warm greeting.

2. Do not make a singleton feel bad. Do not say, “Are you waiting for someone?” Ask for a reservation. Ask if he or she would like to sit at the bar.

3. Never refuse to seat three guests because a fourth has not yet arrived.

Call these do's and don't in restaurant's... )

You can find part one of this here and it links to part two:

http://boss.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/10/29/one-hundred-things-restaurant-staffers-should-never-do-part-one/

So if you are at a restaurant...keep these things in mind when your waiter serves you!
