Summary: IMDB and me
Loretta Castorini, a book keeper from Brooklyn, New York, finds herself in a difficult situation when she falls for the brother of the man she agreed to marry (the best friend of her late husband who died seven years previously).

IMDB for cast and credits:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0093565/

I am catching this movie on the DISH and I have not seen it for a while. This is an oldie but goodie and I have always loved this movie. All the acting is good in this and it is a story of love from many angles and an Italian-American family in NY. Gorgeous opera music dotted throughout the story and a tour de force, angry performance by Nicolas Cage. Cher is great in this as the girl who comes alive in love in this. So much to love about this film. Olympia Dukakis has the great lines.

Overall rating:
Excellent and holds up to the years.

Recommend:
Totally.

Warnings:
Romantic.

The Campaign (2012)

Summary: IMDB
In order to gain influence over their North Carolina district, two CEOs seize an opportunity to oust long-term congressman Cam Brady by putting up a rival candidate. Their man: naive Marty Huggins, director of the local Tourism Center.

IMDB for cast and credits:

This movie was really well timed to coincide with the upcoming election and was very, very, very funny. I love both the lead actors in this - Will Ferrell and Zack Galifianakis. They are both absolutely hilarious and it is non-stop, spoofing action on the campaign political front. It cannot help but make you see how ridiculous politics is. Trash talking and everything. Loved it. There is a plot to it too but it is enough that these two very funny comedic actors are just at each other. And I love the ending too. Just great. Not giving it away but it is touching. Anyways. See this if you want some laughs.

Overall rating:
Hilarious.

Yes.

Warnings:
Potty humour and some tastelessness. For sure!

This looks good and creepy. I always liked the original movie with Genevieve Bujold. This one has Ridley Scott working on the project. I think it is still relevant with all the medical research they are doing.

True Blood (2012)
TV series on HBO

Summary: IMDB and me
In a world where vampires have "come out of the coffin", Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress, discovers a new world of different creatures when she meets Bill Compton, a vampire.

This season - vampires seek dominance over humans.

Website for the show:
http://www.hbo.com/#/true-blood

I feel like I have to watch True Blood but I am not liking the direction of this show and what they have done with the characters. I really hope that they pull this out in the last episodes. Just wanted to put this out there. No spoilers just a statement, review, whatever. Kind of suck on True Blood this season. Only bonus is lots of shots of Alcide with his shirt off. That works for me.

Overall rating:
So so.

Recommend:
Usually I do. Not too sure.

Some gruesome stuff and violence.

Speed (1994)

Summary: IMDB and me
A young cop must prevent a bomb exploding aboard a Los Angeles city bus by keeping its speed above 50 mph. Psychotic bomber with an axe to grind.

IMDB for cast and credits:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0111257/

So I always find Keanu Reeves a little wooden but in this movie it kind of plays as brave stoicism. He is not bad. This movie is all dynamic tension as the city bus tries to stay above 50 mph in Los Angeles traffic (no kidding). I have seen this movie many times and can always watch it. The panic of the bus passengers, Dennis Hopper as the psycho bomber and the cops actions - all combine to make this very entertaining. I have always liked this movie. It is not a great film but a good, action movie with tension. Classic tension filled movie. Also - Sandra Bullock very perky in this.

Overall rating:
Good and tense.

Recommend:
I do and Keanu is not bad. Bonus points for psychotic Dennis Hopper.

Warnings:
Some gruesome stuff and violence.

War of the Worlds(2005)

Summary: IMDB
As Earth is invaded by alien tripod fighting machines, one family fights for survival.

IMDB for cast and credits:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0407304/

This movie is a must watch for me everytime I see it on TV. So much to compel me to watch it. I want to hate Tom Cruise but he is great here as the working class dad who is trying to make sure his kids survive the alien invasion. He will do anything, ANYTHING to ensure they survive. He proves this again and again. The kids are great and this movie realizes an incredible thing - an alien invasion really well. The cinematography is beautiful and the moment that they realize the aliens are hostile is just so well done. I always hold my breath with them and then it happens. Amazing. This movie is interesting even when I know every scene. Some hard moments in it too. Cataclysmic and it ends the same way as Orson Wells radio broadcast. Really good.

Overall rating:
Very good and compelling.

Recommend:
I really do! Even with Tom Cruise in it!

Warnings:
Violence in a sci fi situation. Some personal violence.

The Watch (2012)

Summary: IMDB
Suburban dads who form a neighborhood watch group as a way to get out of their day-to-day family routines find themselves defending the Earth from an alien invasion.

I saw this movie a while ago and am just getting around to the review. I remember thinking as I went to see this that it was a bit unfortunate the timing of the release of this movie so soon after the shooting of Trevon Martin. I am surprised no one raised the issue. Anyways - that was just thought that I had as I went into the movie - weird to see a movie about rogue Neighorhood Watch stuff when that case is at trial.

I was able to forget that issue as I watch this ridiculously implausible, yet funny movie. Vince Vaughn totally made this for me. Ben Stiller, not so much and he was the lead in this. I really enjoyed Vince Vaughn and found him really funny in this. The ensemble comedy worked here and there are some hilarious scenes in this. Total hijinks. I do think that this is more of a rental or catch it on cable kind of thing. I go to a lot of movies but this could be a see it on TV. No big scenery or special effects that need to be on the big movie screen.

That is my review, I am sticking to it. Good and catch this on cable for some laughs.

Summary: IMDB
A factory worker, Douglas Quaid, begins to suspect that he is a spy after visiting Rekall - a company that provides its clients with implanted fake memories of a life they would like to have led - goes wrong and he finds himself on the run.

This will be a very short review. Sci fi thriller and a remake of a previous movie by the same title. I cannot remember the plot of the other one but this one had a whole political thing going on that worked for me. Colin Farrell gives a good performance as the central character whose memory is altered. Kate Beckinsale rocks it here as the baddy. Love her kicking ass and we know she can from the Underworld series. I like the geo-political intro at the beginning which sets the stage.

Cut for spoiler on the film...and problem with the film. )

In general I liked this movie and found it very entertaining and twisty. Good twists and turns and left me guessing. I like not knowing what is going to happen.

This is a fanmade movie trailer for a non-existent movie of JRR Tolkien's, The Silmarillion. But watch this! It is so well done! I am telling you. Peter Jackson should really think about making this movie. I do think it would be at least a 5 part film to get the whole thing done right. But this is fabulous. Does my fandom heart proud.

Snoop Dog Becomes Snoop Lion (commentary)

So I logged into my email and am greeted by this tantalizing article in the masthead. Snoop Dog changes his name. Intrigued, I have to click in and read it. I admit to clicking on the articles on yahoo as more times than not, they amuse. This one did not disappoint. Snoop Dog is changing his name to Snoop Lion - he is going to do rasta music and he claims to be Bob Marley reincarnated. I guess he went to Jamaica and found himself there - or more to the point - he communed with the spirit of Bob Marley.

Now, I love reggae and I have to say, I am going to follow this transformation in the Snoop-verse and see where he goes with this. Here is the article so you can read it yourself.

http://music.yahoo.com/news/snoop-dogg-becomes-snoop-lion-readies-reggae-cd-161013663.html

Snoop wants to write music that his kids and family can listen to. Ok, man. Do that. I might listen to you too. The only song I can stand by him now is the one he did with Katy Perry (California Gurlz). So, I am curious enough to listen to the man and see what he will do. Bob Marley wrote beautiful lyrics and amazing songs so I think that Snoop is raising the bar pretty high here but I will see what he does. I prefer reggae to the offensive stuff he has been doing so let's go man - DO IT.

Anyways. This applies to culture so this is a 100 things post. :)

The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel (2012)

Summary: IMDB
British retirees travel to India to take up residence in what they believe is a newly restored hotel. Less luxurious than its advertisements, the Marigold Hotel nevertheless slowly begins to charm in unexpected ways.

Another short review. A really touching movie about expats in India and British retirees who all retire to a residential hotel (Exotic Marigold Hotel) for various reasons. Lots of star power in this - Judi Dench, Maggie Smith etc and really good performances. I really enjoyed this film and found it very touching. I also enjoyed the scenery and sights and sounds of India. Worth seeing in the theater for the grandness of India but I think it will be out of the theaters soon. I also really loved the music in the sound track.

The Eighty-Dollar Champion: Snowman, The Horse That Inspired a Nation
by Elizabeth Letts
Book Preview

Book description: (from amazon.com)
Harry de Leyer first saw the horse he would name Snowman on a truck bound for the slaughterhouse. The recent Dutch immigrant recognized the spark in the eye of the beaten-up nag and bought him for eighty dollars. On Harry’s modest farm on Long Island, he ultimately taught Snowman how to fly. Here is the dramatic and inspiring rise to stardom of an unlikely duo. One show at a time, against extraordinary odds and some of the most expensive thoroughbreds alive, the pair climbed to the very top of the sport of show jumping. Their story captured the heart of Cold War–era America—a story of unstoppable hope, inconceivable dreams, and the chance to have it all. They were the longest of all longshots—and their win was the stuff of legend.

I have not read this book yet but I saw this in the book store and was compelled to buy it. I love a good horse story on the vein of Secretariat and Seabiscuit. I find them fascinating and usually the tale is about more than the horse, there is history, society and true determination. Horses are magnificent, brave creatures. Anyway. I am adding an element to my 100 things posting - previews of books. I wanted to post about this one before I read it.

I was going to buy it on my kindle but there was no price break and I wanted to have this book on my shelf with my other horse books. I have a little category going. I will read this in book form.

Franklin and Bash (2011 - 2012)

Summary: IMDB
Lawyers and lifelong friends Jared Franklin and Peter Bash are recruited by a large firm's major partner after winning a high-profile case.

So I really want to call this just another show about two white male lawyers in a prestigious law firm. And it is about two white lawyers in a prestigious law firm...but this show is very well done. I don't want to watch it but I find myself totally entertained everytime and keep watching. It has one of my favorite actors in it - Breckin Meyer - and he has just amazing comedic timing and the second lead Mark Paul Gosselaer is easy on the eyes and pretty funny too. Fun cameo role by Malcolm MacDowell as the head partner of the law firm and interesting supporting roles fill out the racial mosaic of the show and character portraits here. The case load is interesting and what I really like is the best friend element to this show - Franklin and Bash really are total buds and that comes through. This show is fun to watch and I go back to it each week without fail. So I am giving this a good review on entertainment, laughs and interest. There it is!
