 Hey - I am here - I went to a concert last night at the Fox Theatre in Oakland. I got tickets to see Bob Dylan. He is 80 years old and touring so I thought it would be a good idea to see him. I am not a huge Dylan fan but I like his music and thing he is really important. His show was good but it was not the best show I have seen. He played a pretty short set and did not do any encores. I think at 80 years old - that is what you do - you play a short amount of music and get it done. He sounded good and had that trademark nasal thing going on. I am glad I saw him play. He sat down for most of the show at the keyboards and that was about it. I guess he gets annoyed by people on their cell phones at his shows so they have a system for cell phones at his show. You have to put your cell phone in a nylon pouch and they lock it in there. This is so you don't spend his whole show playing on your phone. I read online that he got really upset with cellphones at one of his shows so now he handles them like this. You get the pouch unlocked on the way out of the show and this way you pay attention to the music at the show and don't get distracted. I think if it makes him feel better as an artist - go for it. It did not bother me and took very little time there to do. They had a ton of people helping unlock our phones at the end there so no delay getting out of there.

That's about all I have to say today. I will cross post this to LJ/

Snoop Dog Becomes Snoop Lion (commentary)

So I logged into my email and am greeted by this tantalizing article in the masthead. Snoop Dog changes his name. Intrigued, I have to click in and read it. I admit to clicking on the articles on yahoo as more times than not, they amuse. This one did not disappoint. Snoop Dog is changing his name to Snoop Lion - he is going to do rasta music and he claims to be Bob Marley reincarnated. I guess he went to Jamaica and found himself there - or more to the point - he communed with the spirit of Bob Marley.

Now, I love reggae and I have to say, I am going to follow this transformation in the Snoop-verse and see where he goes with this. Here is the article so you can read it yourself.

http://music.yahoo.com/news/snoop-dogg-becomes-snoop-lion-readies-reggae-cd-161013663.html

Snoop wants to write music that his kids and family can listen to. Ok, man. Do that. I might listen to you too. The only song I can stand by him now is the one he did with Katy Perry (California Gurlz). So, I am curious enough to listen to the man and see what he will do. Bob Marley wrote beautiful lyrics and amazing songs so I think that Snoop is raising the bar pretty high here but I will see what he does. I prefer reggae to the offensive stuff he has been doing so let's go man - DO IT.

Anyways. This applies to culture so this is a 100 things post. :)

A half time show worth watching. Madonna oh yeah. Her show actually works for the stadium and TV at the same time. She really is worth watching. Music, costumes, choreagraphy and technology combine to make this excellent. I am not all that into her music but I am really enjoying this! She also looks amazing. I love the ending message on her presentation - World Peace. Go Madonna!**

Another commentary on the music - the national music at the beginning - I really loved Kelly Clarkson and the duet people that sang. I thought the tone was respectful and the music on our national songs was just lovely.

**I saw on the news today that one of the dancers flipped off the camera. Too bad but I missed that so it did not effect my viewing of the show.

Years ago I saw STOMP in Boston and they are coming again this Fall to SF (Orpheum Theater). I just bought tickets today and am going with some work friends. So excited, cannot tell you. This is a kind of urban primitive meets percussion from found materials (brooms, zippos, barrels, metal lids). Very fresh, very fun and very rhythmic. I was just floored by this when I saw it the first time and am really looking forward to seeing this again. Woot! So STOMP everybody!

We Shall Overcome...

We shall overcome, we shall overcome,
We shall overcome someday;
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We shall overcome someday.

The Lord will see us through, The Lord will see us through,
The Lord will see us through someday;
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We shall overcome someday.

We're on to victory, We're on to victory,
We're on to victory someday;
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We're on to victory someday.

We'll walk hand in hand, we'll walk hand in hand,
We'll walk hand in hand someday;
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We'll walk hand in hand someday.

We are not afraid, we are not afraid,
We are not afraid today;
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We are not afraid today.

The truth shall set us free , the truth shall set us free,
The truth shall set us free someday;
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
The truth shall set us free someday.

We shall live in peace, we shall live in peace,
We shall live in peace someday;
Oh, deep in my heart, I do believe,
We shall live in peace someday.

Today we commemorate Martin Luther King, a champion for Civil Rights. We still have a long way to go in that regard and I thought I would make this post to remind us of the importance of today.

I love the lyrics to Auld Lang Syne and upon closer inspection there are a few versions to this song. Here is the English translation and the link to the Wiki article on this song. As always there is more to something than meets the eye...the original words were by a Scots poet Robert Burns and set to a folk tune.

Link to wiki info: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Auld_Lang_Syne

Auld Lang Syne

Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and never brought to mind ?
Should old acquaintance be forgot,
and days of old lang syne ?

CHORUS:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
for auld lang syne,
we'll take a cup of kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

And surely you’ll buy your pint cup !
and surely I’ll buy mine !
And we'll take a cup o’ kindness yet,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We two have run about the slopes,
and picked the daisies fine ;
But we’ve wandered many a weary foot,
since days of auld lang syne.

CHORUS

We two have paddled in the stream,
from morning sun till dine† ;
But seas between us broad have roared
since auld lang syne.

CHORUS

And there’s a hand my trusty friend !
And give us a hand o’ thine !
And we’ll take a right good-will draught,
for auld lang syne.

CHORUS

A fine and happy New Year to all. Ringing out 2010 and in with 2011. I am happy to count you all as friends. Be well, safe and happy.

For this picture again. It has a sensibility to it that I really like. I found I was uploading it again and thought, why not, I will repost it again. It is an amazing picture. This is from Dieux du Stade 2008 and just wow. I love this one. Anyhoo. Repete s'il vous plait. :P Some things bare repeating. This guy's name is Mirco.

In other news...
I have had a busy weekend. On Friday night I went out to Cafe Poblana with an old friend who has looked me up. It was terrific and we talked and talked. Good times. Very good times. Then last night I went out to this new restaurant in Berkeley that I have been dying to go to: Revival. Really good place and the food was marketed as farm to table. We had a really good experience there. Then we went to Freight and Salvage (a Berkeley institution for the folk-country set) and saw a really good blue grass band called 49 Special. They really kicked it. I do love good blue grass music and had so much fun watching them play. The fiddler (Alisa Rose) was fantastic and their vocal harmonies were sweet and soulful.

Here is a video:

Very fun. Today is movie day and I am going to see SALT with friends from work. All in all a busy weekend which is unusual. All my graphics are delayed but that happens. Cheers to all and have a great Sunday!

I heard this song in the car tonight and I just liked the sense and sensibility of it. The sound and upbeatness of it. Next on my got to get list. Just a share of some music for the list. Pulled down from youtube for y'all. This song is called One Way Road...

You have to stop the video after the song as it will keep going into live music by them.

You can read more about them here:

So I was walking home and had to stop by Walgreen's for one thing or another and it is funny when they play a good song on the radio...it just makes it fun. They were playing Rock Around the Clock on the PA system there and I tell you, people were dancing while they shopped and singing right along. Way fun. That is such an oldie but goodie. It is nice to know people still love that one.

Sharing.

Here is a meme for you! Made it up myself! :P

If you are listening to a song right now. Find the lyrics online and post them in your journal. Be sure to post the title and the artists as well.

If you see someone post this on their journal...just DO IT!

He he he.

Here is mine:

I Never Fall Asleep at Night
Crash Test Dummies

Watch that spider in the bathroom sink
Hes a better friend than you might think
So let him spin his web in peace
He catches creepy crawly things

I never fall asleep at night
I never get the chance
My thoughts won't stop spinning round
They dance and dance and dance

Watch each hair on your head turn gray
Look out the window and count your days
One two four five six seven eight
There ain't much to love and there's plenty to hate

I never fall asleep at night
I never get the chance
My thoughts won't stop spinning round
They dance and dance and dance

Look at that bone-yard over there
You can see it out the window from the kitchen chair
I wanna see my name carved in one of them stones
I wanna be part of them rottin' bones

I never fall asleep at night
I never get the chance
My thoughts won't stop spinning round
They dance and dance and dance

The answer to the Friday contest was Azeri or Ajerbajani. [livejournal.com profile] blue_blue was the winner of that particular contest. Just one winner this time. Thank you to all those who participated in the contest this time. I know that the text did not come out on some computers so it was more difficult. So...thanks!

Had to cancel the hair/beauty thing today. Mainly due to the spending spree I went on yesterday. I bought tons of stuff. Cat food, clippers, new collar and tags. Hmm what else. Toothbrushes, mounds of ibuprophen, batteries. We went to a close out sale at the Porch Light, this cute little store that is moving to Portland, OR. They have lovely linens and crockery and candles and soaps and things. I bought a gift for someone and some things for me. All discounted of course.

I also had my first Walmart experience. Oh my. That place is worse than Target! Huge and full of shit. I mean really. Shopping to the max. I was able to get a new DVD player for a reasonable price, though. I wanted a digital camera but cannot afford that this month. Even I know when to stop buying. I have been advised by [livejournal.com profile] khylea to look on ebay for this item and she is a fount of wisdom on such matters. I will do my best to comply. I think I can get a good deal. I love ebay anyways. So I will start to look there. She gave me the lowdown on what to look for in cameras so away I go with all the pertinent facts. *gives her a noogie*

We watched a good movie last night. Flight of the Phoenix, 2004. Now this got panned at the time but I have to tell you, we were all riveted, absolutely riveted. It was compelling and well acted. The only people I knew were Dennis Quaid (*heart*) and Miranda Otto (Eowyn). But the cast was solid in all their wise-cracking glory. I also knew Giovanni Ribisi who was so not like him. So here is the synopsis of the film...*cough* movie. With promo poster.

ExpandFlight of the Phoenix )

It also had a kick ass song in there by Outkast so. I liked it. I really did. The mens were cute. Mm hmm. Yes they was.

So Sunday will be full of cleaning and tidying. Might organize my books and such. So that is what I am doing.

*cheers*

I been tagged and I so wanted to do this one. Thanks [livejournal.com profile] jaiden_s. You my girl!

List seven songs you are into right now. No matter what the genre, whether they have words, or even if they're not any good, but they must be songs you're really enjoying now. Post these instructions in your livejournal along with your seven songs. Then tag seven other people to see what they're listening to.

1. Life is a Highway, Rascall Flatts
2. The Joker, Fat Boy Slim's version
3. Ooh La La, The Faces
4. Short Skirt, Long Jacket, Cake
5. If I Had a Boat, Lyle Lovett
6. Sweet Thing, The Waterboys
7. I See You Baby, Groove Armada

Who to tag....I go with the following....

[livejournal.com profile] rumil_of_lorien
[livejournal.com profile] larian
[livejournal.com profile] tuxedo_elf
[livejournal.com profile] fairjennet
[livejournal.com profile] jenlittlebottom
[livejournal.com profile] luin77
[livejournal.com profile] blue_blue

[livejournal.com profile] keiliss would have been tagged but she has no internet access right now and it is not fair to do that.

I am off to get things done and I think I will take myself out to lunch at the local mediterranean place. May do some window shopping on the Avenue here. So that is all for today. It is not that hot but I want to go meander for a bit and get out of the house. Perhaps I will swim later too. You never know.

Have a good day everyone.

So we had the lunch. No one ordered anything over 10.00 off the menu and I felt guilty... so I got the fish tacos. I was pleasantly surprised. They were a spicey, delicious treat. Came with a salad and everything. Mmmm. The steak would have been too much for one person. It is a huge portion.

So anyways. That is what I got. Thanks to everyone who voted. I am going to cook steak to make up for not getting it!

I am home now and listening to my new Rhett Miller CD. Well two of them really. I got The Instigator which came out in 1992 and The Believer which came out this year. They are both very good and reminiscent of the Old 97's. I love this guy's voice.

Hoo.

Saw this on [livejournal.com profile] keiliss's LJ.

Your Theme Song is Beautiful Day by U2

"Sky falls, you feel like
It's a beautiful day
Don't let it get away"

You see the beauty in life, especially in ordinary everyday moments.
And if you're feeling down, even that seems a little beautiful too.

I was listening to that CD yesterday!
