On the other side of the menorah now. Night 5 - lots of candles to light now and it gets hot, real hot.

Had fun seeing The Hobbit 3 again tonight. I liked it better this time - way better. I saw so much more detail on this viewing. It is a beautiful film. More thoughts later.

Hope you are having a good weekend and getting ready for the holidays.

Cheers.

I met a comic book artist - Babs Tarr - yesterday at my local comic book store - in Berkeley - (shout out to The Escapist on Claremont!). She is very cool and she is the artist for the latest Batgirl run at DC Comics. I have been really getting into comic books lately. I have been reading Dr. Strange, Black Widow, The Walking Dead and some others. A newbie really but it is fun and the art is really cool. Here is a cover from Babs Tarr on the Batgirl run. She animated this on her blog.

In other news - I got some Christmas shopping done yesterday and of course I bought myself some stuff. One for them - one for me kind of thing. I did not blow my budget and I just have one gift card left to get and then I think I am done for the season. I have presents under my tree which is cool.

While I was Christmas shopping in the Elmwood District of Berkeley - a protest rolled right in there and blocked up the area. They were really pretty cool about it and did not take up any side walk space - they were just in the street and their goal was to tie up the intersection which they did. My car got trapped by two buses but it was liberated by the time I really had to go and get to the artist thing I wanted to go to. So that was cool. I could keep shopping and enjoy the civil unrest. Works for me. It was part of the nationwide protest yesterday.

Anyhoo. Work is winding down and I am finishing up projects for the year. I am kind of done and want to be finished. I don't finish up really until Dec 23. So that will go on for a while. [profile] khylea comes in on the 25th so that is cool.

Can you guys believe The Hobbit comes out next week? Hurrah! I am going the first night, I think. I cannot wait. Yays! And then it will be over and I will be sad.

Anyhoo. That is all I have. I am trying to post more often. Doing ok with that. I love comments. So comment here and I will respond!

I am watching The Hobbit - Desolation. I have to say - one of my favorite scenes is Tauriel healing Kili with the athelas. It is just so beautiful. I really love her character in general in the film. I have to say she is a wonderful addition to the story. There, I have said it! Say what you want. I love her!

So I saw the Desolation of Smaug last night and while I really did enjoy the film quite a bit - found it riveting and interesting and all that. I feel that the film has to now be viewed as a loosely adaptive work of fan fiction.

As a writer of fan fiction - I don't mind embellishing a tale at all. I do it all the time when I write a story. Some might view this as a negative but I don't really - but if you expect to find Tolkien's original story in these movies - you will be disappointed.

The second movie was very entertaining. I barely noticed the 2 hours and 40 mins. I was really surprised when the film was done. I could have stayed for more. Usually I notice a movie's length but not with this one. I loved the additional action sequences, really loved the additional character of Tauriel and it all worked for me as a film.

I did miss some aspects of the book that I wanted to see in the film but I am letting that go. Overall this was very good entertainment and well worth seeing for any Tolkien fan.

Thumbs up. :)

I made some Hobbit icons from the new banners they posted today. Different plays on light and a desaturated exposure. Enjoy!

Samples:

 photo thranduil-1-phyncke-1_zps661f61df.gif photo gandalf-3-phyncke-1_zps10a7f621.gif photo bilbo-3-phyncke-1_zps30f0ff6a.gif photo thorin-3-phyncke_zpse74d112e.gif photo tauriel-4-phyncke-1_zpsa2f1e215.gif photo bard-3-phyncke-1_zps3dd20d88.gif photo legolas-2-phyncke_zps9799a102.gif

All versions of the icons this way... )

I made an icon of Tauriel because as a fanfic writer - I write OC's all the time. Her inclusion in the film does not bother me that much. I think she makes a beautiful elf and look forward to seeing her in the next film. I am more curious than anything about how that will be.

Cheers. Comment to let me know you took something. Credit not required but appreciated.

It is Rosh Hoshanah. So for all of us Jews around here - it is new year's. So happy new year to you. It is 5774 for us. Pretty cool. Here is an article from the Huffington Post.

In other news - here are some blurbs -
-I bought some new pajamas - leopard print at that. Pretty cool. I really like them.
-I am not interested in work right now. Guess I would rather be reading slash or doing anything else
-I am pleased with the responses to my Sultry in September story.
-I should write more. I have some projects I could pull out and get to
-When is the next Hobbit movie coming out. Seems like forever.

That is all I have. Anyone out there? Helloooo.

This post is not to be shared on FB. Keep it secret, keep it safe.

And found it a total page turned from start to finish. I was worried that I would not like it or something since the movie was being done and all that. I have to say - this was way better than the movie by far. The original is well, so much better. I don't think it needs all that extra stuff. I find myself thinking why? This has all the drama that you really need. I don't see why this already excellent story needed to be changed. It is so good already. I will reserve my final judgement until the end of the third movie but here are my hopes:

-They leave the Beorn parts in and don't omit those. He is pretty important and pivotal. I hope he does not go the way of Tom Bombadil in LOTR. I am fearful of that really and he was so cool.

-That we don't get overkill on this Azog subplot. I fear that it will overwhelm the story. I really do. He was only a footnote in the tale (a mention). I think they are making that too central and it will ruin the whole thing. PJ does not get to rewrite this really excellent story. It was good the way it was! Does anyone agree with me here?

Anyways. This are just my ramblings on The Hobbit as I just finished it last night. It is so very good and well written. I am going to look at LOTR again too. These are so wonderful and while I love PJ, I am finding his tweaks of the plots annoying again, really annoying.

Anyhoo. Just some thoughts. Bilbo is pretty faithful to the story and works from film to book. I love him in both.

Cheers.

(Just checked - Beorn is on the cast list! Woot!)

For the sake of balance - here is an alternative view on The Hobbit from Forbes online. I think it is interesting and have to think a little about the ideas it presents. Have a read if you would like. It also discusses the why there are three films thing. I am considering my position. I guess more is better as far as Tolkien movies go. I don't know. I did find this article interesting and it is contrary to my opinions expressed earlier. I like debate. LOL.

I saw The Hobbit and did enjoy the film. I love Peter Jackson as a film maker. Everyone is all fired up about the cinematic technique used in the Hobbit film and I thought it was beautifully done as far as the imagery and rendering. It looked beautiful. Scenery and realization check. I am going to put my review behind a cut for those who have not seen the film yet as there will be spoilers in there.

What I really think of The Hobbit... )

Here is a comment about The Hobbit...

"This movie has lost all semblance of being true to the original Tolkien novel. The movie has become an excuse for every actor and wannabe to jump on the Hobbit money train. It's a shame really"

from a message board to do with today's announcement regarding Evangeline Lilly playing Tauriel. Mixed reactions really to that and the insertion of a character into the work. Here is where you can find the story about her...

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-2005448/Lost-star-Evangeline-Lilly-star-Hobbit.html

Does seem a bit of a circus and I hope they don't lose the magic. I found the reaction comments really interesting.

Anyhoo. Going to see TTT in the theater tonight. Tres excited about that. Yays! Hot here today so I am having gazpacho for lunch. Yum.

Lee Pace has been cast to play Thranduil in the upcoming movie, The Hobbit. Here is a picture. He is handsome and a bit of an obscure choice for the elven king. Good bone structure and Juilliard trained.

Much was made of David Tennant getting this role but I think that given his versatility, that would have worked too.

Anyways. I don't know this person as an actor so fingers crossed!

Here is the story from One Ring:
