And found it a total page turned from start to finish. I was worried that I would not like it or something since the movie was being done and all that. I have to say - this was way better than the movie by far. The original is well, so much better. I don't think it needs all that extra stuff. I find myself thinking why? This has all the drama that you really need. I don't see why this already excellent story needed to be changed. It is so good already. I will reserve my final judgement until the end of the third movie but here are my hopes:

-They leave the Beorn parts in and don't omit those. He is pretty important and pivotal. I hope he does not go the way of Tom Bombadil in LOTR. I am fearful of that really and he was so cool.

-That we don't get overkill on this Azog subplot. I fear that it will overwhelm the story. I really do. He was only a footnote in the tale (a mention). I think they are making that too central and it will ruin the whole thing. PJ does not get to rewrite this really excellent story. It was good the way it was! Does anyone agree with me here?

Anyways. This are just my ramblings on The Hobbit as I just finished it last night. It is so very good and well written. I am going to look at LOTR again too. These are so wonderful and while I love PJ, I am finding his tweaks of the plots annoying again, really annoying.

Anyhoo. Just some thoughts. Bilbo is pretty faithful to the story and works from film to book. I love him in both.

Cheers.

(Just checked - Beorn is on the cast list! Woot!)

I'm glad Beorn is there. He would be between Imladris and Mirkwood. Actually that is why I created Morbeorn in my old Under the Beeches series. He was supposed to be Beorn's ancestor.

I squeed a bit when I saw the promo image with Beorn in it. I really hope Jackson releases the trailer for the next movie soon!

Yeah, I have found the PJ's plot tweaks annoying, but I mostly understand why he did them. Still don't like them, though...

I understand the reason for the dramatis but the original is very dramatic and compelling. Not seeing why it needed to be amped up like that.

When we did our reread of The Hobbit, we had lots of people who said they'd never read the book because it was for children and things like that. They were supposedly actual Tolkien fans but I totally disagree with them.

Where LOTR is really an epic, The Hobbit is an adventure! It's a never a dull moment from beginning to end adventure and if PJ had not changed one thing, the story would stand up for itself.

Bilbo is a lovely character and Martin Freeman is a sweet Bilbo.

It would totally stand up - lots of action in there. I wanted to read it again to see if it needed to be changed for the screen and I found that it did not. It was compelling enough as it was written.

Love Bilbo and I found the screen version faithful to the book. That is why he works so well.

Now I think I must read it again.
It's been years, no decades, actually.
Definitely time.

I see your edit. I was gonna say Beorn is in it. ;)
I am just at the part of The Hobbit where they are in Mirkwood and meet Thranduil's party .

I loved that part - the lights in the forest etc. Crashing the festivities. Poor dwarves. The elves are so elvish there. I loved the whole thing actually. It is so good.

I checked on the Beorn thing. I wanted to be sure.
