Here we are on Memorial Day - I know people celebrate here in the US but this is really a holiday for fallen soldiers. Kind of solemn. So thinking on that. It is the holiday for people who have died in service. A time to remember them. I don't know anyone who has died in service but we have had a lot of wars and people have died for this country. So thinking on that today. It is nice to have the extra day off but it is not just about that.

I had a nice relaxing weekend - spent time at home - did lots of nothing. I got really into this show on HBO Max called Mare of Easttown. I binged it for the most part and they had the last episode on last night. Kate Winslet plays the main - lead character and I have a new appreciation for her as an actor. Really subtle performance by her. If you have HBO this is totally worth watching. Highly recommend this show. Loved it. Murder mystery and character drama. Excellent.

What else did I do - not much - read a bit. I did not do my chores.

Watching the French Open. I am pretty upset at what has happened to Naomi Osaka - she has withdrawn from the tournament because of their press policy. I really do feel like something could have been worked out there. She has a problem with doing the press interviews - as a shy, introverted person and it really impacts her. She was being honest and open about her feelings on that. She wanted to focus on her tennis and skip the press interviews. I can see how those would be a nightmare for an introvert. So Roland Garros management fined her ($15K( and were threatening to do worse to her - for not doing the press interviews during the tournament - so she withdrew - saying she did not want to be a distraction there. That is a really elegant way to do that. This is a really big deal - since Osaka is the top earning tennis player this year. I really feel like they could have worked it out. So now we don't get to see her play and that is really too bad. So really the tournament loses - so that is on them.

Yesterday, I did a fun thing. I went over to UC Berkeley campus and watched the falcons who nest there learn to fly. We have two resident falcons who live in the bell tower - the Campanile - and each year they hatch their eggs. This year they have three fledgling falcons and now is around the time that they are big enough to learn to fly. So I took my binoculars and went over there with a friend to see if we could see the babies launch themselves off the tower. Well we saw a lot. We saw them flapping their wings as they hung off the ledge and then they took off from the ledge and flapped like crazy on their first flight. It was awesome. The parents are named Annie and Grinnell and they live there all the time and the babies this year are named Fauci, Wek-Wek and Kaknu. Annie laid 4 eggs but only three were viable. Once the babies can fly well and hunt for their own food - they will go off and find their own mate and set up a nest of their own. So now is the training time and it is really exciting. Lots of peregrin falcons flying around that tower. We are going to go back and observe again. All three babies have had their first flight and are zooming around there now.

So that is about it for me. Had a low key kind of weekend. No BBQ - I am cooking a steak for dinner tonight - with a potato and some veggies.

That's it for me - hope you are doing well and having a good day.

Hey all. Just a Memorial Day post here - I am doing ok. Still working from home. Still isolating. I go out for walks and to the grocery store and I wear a mask wherever I go. I am doing the pandemic thing here in California. I feel like I have the routine in place and I am comfortable with it so that works for me. I am not going crazy or anything. It is a little isolating and my hair is getting long but I can deal. It is ok. I am determined not to get coronavirus. I really don't want to get sick. I am still washing my hands a lot and doing the hygiene thing.

My cats were sick for a little bit - My Bear got a cold and then Teddy got it. So I had to nurse them a bit. I took Bear to the vet and got some remedies for him that also worked for Teddy. So that happened. They are both doing better now. They were sneezing a lot and that is how I knew. Bear had a lot of congestion coming out of his eyes and nose. Teddy not so much. Anyhoo. They are fine now.

Have you noticed (anyone in the USA) that food is more expensive right now? My grocery shop is about $30.00 more than it used to be. That is a significant increase. I am getting my usual and it seems to cost a lot more. I don't go crazy with the food either - not a lot of snacks or anything. So just wondered what your experience was in your area.

So reflecting on this Memorial Day - thinking about those who have fallen in our wars. That is what this holiday is all about. It is really not about BBQs and partying. It is about remembering the fallen. So trying to do that.

Anyways. Hope all is well with you there. Take good care.

I am really enjoying this loonng weekend. A combination of getting things done around the house (chores), hanging out, shopping for deals with friends and getting some much needed rest. I cannot believe but I still have the remnants of that virus I had (congestion, sneezing etc). That really threw me for a loop there.

So I saw the new Star Trek movie last night. Oh yeah. It was good. I will try not to spoil it here. I know there are some Cumberbatch fans here but he did not really fit his role. He was good but all the roles in these Star Trek films are reminiscent of earlier performances in the original series or earlier iterations of the characters and his performance was a big non-sequiter on that. It did not fit very well - his accent was all wrong. Anyone who has watched Star Trek since the 60's will know what I am talking about there. I still really enjoyed the film but just wanted to state that. Please don't flame me for that. I get how great an actor he is but he really did not fit in with the character he played. Both of us viewing the film together agreed on that. That character did not have a British accent nor look like him. The rest of the movie rocked it and was action packed in a nonstop way. It was also really fun to see the part of the film that I had seen filming in Los Angeles when I was down there. I had an "aha" moment.

Anyways. That is my opinion of the film. If you like Star Trek - go see it. This is a very good movie. Thrilling.

I have some projects to do today. I am listening to the audible World War Z and really enjoying that - zombies. It is an award winning audible which includes Alan Alda and other A-list actors reading. Very good.

Hope you have a good weekend and thinking on Memorial Day and remembering those who died in service to our country. Bless them.

Cheers to you!

My first rant )

What the real story is...

Based on the very inteliigent commentary and further research on this topic, I revise here. As it turns out, Presidents don't necessarily honor this holiday at Arlington--as one of the commenters here pointed out, they might do so at their home town. Also, President Obama chose to honor at Lincoln National Cemetery because of a recently fallen soldier (in Afghanistan) and to pay respects with his family. That ceremony was cancelled due to inclement weather. I am always willing to admit when I am wrong on something and I am really happy to be wrong in this case. I think I was very upset in this case. Here is a link to what happened at Lincoln:

http://www.statesman.com/news/nation/after-rain-out-obama-to-deliver-speech-back-719318.html

President Obama is returning to DC to deliver his address.

I am a much happier camper now and will be sending in another comment to the White House. You can bet on that. Cheers!

At the blinkie contest thing.

Here is my most recent entry in a contest. I was pretty pleased with how this came out but I don't think I even came close. I don't really enter to win but to develop things for myself.

The topic of the contest was "bees". So this worked for me and opins are more than welcome.

Memorial Day was pretty quiet here and I hung out and basically did what I wanted. Slept very late and lounged here. I so do not want to work tomorrow. Augh. It is so much harder to go back when it has been a long weekend.

So
much
harder.

Moanday has been preempted by a National Holiday. I am in a good mood, though feel free to moan if you have need. This journal is always open to that.

I found this glittery flag and I love it so I am posting it. My Dad fought in the Korean War and my brother served in Iraq. So to those who fought...this is for you.

Have a good day everyone. I am going to go hiking in Tilden Park here in Berkeley and I think to the Botanical Gardens. Possible pic spam alert.

I finished my swap fic. Woot.
