phyncke: (Avengers - all)
The Avengers (2012)
Based on Marvel Comics
Movie Review

Finally, here is my review of the newly released Avengers movie. I will attempt to write a spoiler free review for you as I know some people will see and have not yet done. So just the sense of it with no (or not too many) plot give aways.

Cut for slight spoilers... )

What I really love about this movie is that it plays on the strength of the individual characters and the interesting situation of actually assembling them as a team. Nick Fury, the head of shield is trying to turn these super heroes who always work alone, into a team and that inherently is difficult. We have Stark (Iron Man) who seems to get all the witty one liners in the film. We have Captain America, Mr. Earnest and my candidate for Team Leader...he is always thinking of strategy and the big picture. The Hulk, or Dr. Banner, really well played here by Mark Ruffalo. I would totally like to see a new Hulk Film with him in it. Thor was well Thor in all his grandness. Black Widow totally has the moves and Hawkman is Mr. Gorgeous and rocked his bow.

For a while they were divided and bickering and then they come together as The Avengers to rock it for the climax. For me the battle scene is almost secondary to the team element and I am glad for that. The group dynamic seemed more important to me. I think the director Joss Whedon, of Buffy the Vampire fame, did well with that.

Here is a hint, wait until after the end credits, as there is a little gem of a thing after those. You will not be disappointed.

I really enjoyed this film, I laughed, I sympathized, I was with them. I thought each Avenger was featured and showed to their strength. Keep in mind that my bias is that I am an Avenger fan so I go in with that. I love these movies.

I hope you will enjoy this as much as I did.

Here it is Sunday and I have a selection for the Bunday posting. A nice shot of the whole body here and he is nice looking.

*Not safe for work!*

This is Chad White... )

Anyways. Having a good weekend. Relaxing and saw a movie last night (see previous post of movie review). Today, I will likely do some laundry and get my food shopping done. I might also take a walk and get some exercise. See how that goes. I have to finish a dental procedure this week (root canal) so that is not exciting and I have a board meeting for work. Busy as usual and etc.

Hope you are having a good weekend.

We Are Marshall (2012)
Sports, Football Related Story, Based on Actual Events
Movie Review

In 1970, most of The Marshall University football team was killed in a tragic airplane crash. This movie is about the rebuilding of the football program at that college.

I did not plan to watch this movie but I was flicking the channels on my dish and this caught my eye. Intriguing film. I am usually not a fan of sports oriented films but this one is really compelling. Set firmly in the time that I grew up so it is dotted with music that I love and I could relate to it really. But this is a heart wrenching story and it had me in tears at different points through the film.

The backdrop of the tragedy is ever present but Matthew McCaughnehy is excellent as the coach hired to rebuild their team. He plays it with fire and humour. Love him in this and I usually don't like him either. I cannot believe I liked this really. Honestly, so many points against it. I totally got into it.

Really into it, good solid film making. People overcoming obstacles and tragedy to triumph. Great. Weepy me through out and cheering at the end. Ho my gosh! End credits with actual footage of the real team and real coaches. Beautifully orchestrated.

Pride and Prejudice (2005)
Based on the novel by Jane Austen
Movie Review

So I saw this one on the DISH and recorded it for later viewing. Let me explain my complicated feelings about this version of P&P. I have always considered the ultimate version of this story on film to be the 6 hour BBC version with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth (Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy). I have watched that one many times and LOVE it. Almost to the point where I refused to watch this movie! I would not allow Keira Knightly in the lead role and could not accept anyone else as Darcy...just no.

Well, how wrong I was because this is a sweet gem of a movie and move over Colin Firth for this broody, gorgeous hunk of a Darcy, Matthew MacFadyen. I could watch this man enter a room, walk across a field and stalk Elizabeth over and over. He is just so dreamy as to supplant all my previous images of Darcy forever. Here, is the ultimate Darcy...gorgeous soulful eyes, luscious lips and just so intense as to be perfect for him. I did not think it possible, but he IS him. And Keira Knightly as Elizabeth? Really well done. She is spirited, plucky and clever - just as Elizabeth should be. Excellent secondary roles here. Jane is very Jane, Bingley, nervous and wonderful. I even hated Bingley's sister...which is perfect! Donald Sutherland plays the father and Dame Judi Dench, the very formidable Lady Catherine DeBurgh. No weak performances in this movie. Costumes to the period and I loved every bit of that.

This film works really well in the 2 hour run time. Lots of slicing and dicing of the story and they show the essential P&P and the very important parts of the story. The setting is lovely, shades of Pemberley - picturesque. But I tell you, I watched parts of this over and over again, with tears and enjoyment. This is a wonderful version of the story. There were some interesting ways of telling here that completely set it apart from other versions of this movie. I liked the staging, the cinematography and the resolution of their love as the sun shines through their arms as they touch, just gorgeous.

Well done.
