Captain America (2011)
Based on Marvel Comics
DVD Movie Review
In anticipation of the Avengers movie coming out this week, I am watching the individual Avenger hero movies that I have on DVD. The last in this review series is Captain America as in the last dvd I have in my collection.
Captain America aka Steve Rogers is the "first Avenger" and this story is set during WWII. We have Hitler in the backdrop, battles going on, Allied involvement etc and a really good rival villain played by Hugo Weaving, the dastardly Red Skull. His modus is that he wants to harness the power of Odin (remember Thor and the Norse gods), turn it into a weapon and dominate the world. The beginning scene is of him in Norway finding Odin's power source and it is on from there.
Then, we meet Steve Rogers, wimpy kid, created through incredible CGI technology on Chris Evans to look like a totally underformed and sickly guy who is desperate to get into the Army and do his part. He keeps enlisting over and over again to be turned down for medical reasons. He has a litany of ailments and problems. Finally, he hits the right Army recruitment center where Dr. Erskine is looking for the hero with a heart to turn into his super soldier. He thinks Rogers is it based on a conversation he overhears.
Rogers fails all the physical tests and is totally not impressive but when it comes down to it and a fake live grenade is thrown on to the training ground, he proves himself to be the real hero by throwing his body onto it to protect all present. He passes the test.
And then he becomes the hero he truly is through process of injections of a cool colored liquid. It stimulates his muscle groups and neurons on a cellular level. He steps out of this chamber and oh la la, totally buff, super dude, ready for action. He is bigger, stronger and most excellent. The scientist dies as their experiment is infiltrated by the Red Skull's "Hydra" operative.
Then Rogers is used to sell war bonds. He has to do this hokey performance over and over, around the country and overseas. I am not clear on why he is not utilized as a soldier but when he is finally sent to Europe, he finds out his best friend is missing and goes into action, going on a one-man, secret, unauthorized mission to rescue a bunch of soldiers behind enemy lines. He proves his abilities and his worth and from then on in, he gets to do active, military combat against the Red Skull and Hydra.
The movie culminates in a confrontation between Red Skull (Hugo) and Steve (Chris) and both are lost...we assume they both die and then we flash forward to 60 years later and Rogers waking up in a room that is set up to look like 1940's Americana. He figures it out quick and breaks his way out to the street level and contemporary NYC, and here comes Nick Fury to explain it all to him.
I love this movie because of the pure heroism of the lead character. He is driven by pure idealism and a need for justice in the world. As the first Avenger, he is pretty much the best Avenger. No dark side, just brightness and light. As for the movie, the 40's production value and stills were amazing and the end credits are wonderfully done. This is a well made film and really enjoyable for the music, graphics and cinematography.
