Movie Review

So I saw this one on the DISH and recorded it for later viewing. Let me explain my complicated feelings about this version of P&P. I have always considered the ultimate version of this story on film to be the 6 hour BBC version with Jennifer Ehle and Colin Firth (Elizabeth Bennett and Mr. Darcy). I have watched that one many times and LOVE it. Almost to the point where I refused to watch this movie! I would not allow Keira Knightly in the lead role and could not accept anyone else as Darcy...just no.

Well, how wrong I was because this is a sweet gem of a movie and move over Colin Firth for this broody, gorgeous hunk of a Darcy, Matthew MacFadyen. I could watch this man enter a room, walk across a field and stalk Elizabeth over and over. He is just so dreamy as to supplant all my previous images of Darcy forever. Here, is the ultimate Darcy...gorgeous soulful eyes, luscious lips and just so intense as to be perfect for him. I did not think it possible, but he IS him. And Keira Knightly as Elizabeth? Really well done. She is spirited, plucky and clever - just as Elizabeth should be. Excellent secondary roles here. Jane is very Jane, Bingley, nervous and wonderful. I even hated Bingley's sister...which is perfect! Donald Sutherland plays the father and Dame Judi Dench, the very formidable Lady Catherine DeBurgh. No weak performances in this movie. Costumes to the period and I loved every bit of that.

This film works really well in the 2 hour run time. Lots of slicing and dicing of the story and they show the essential P&P and the very important parts of the story. The setting is lovely, shades of Pemberley - picturesque. But I tell you, I watched parts of this over and over again, with tears and enjoyment. This is a wonderful version of the story. There were some interesting ways of telling here that completely set it apart from other versions of this movie. I liked the staging, the cinematography and the resolution of their love as the sun shines through their arms as they touch, just gorgeous.

Well done.
