Big Boy (from Me Talk Pretty One Day)
by David Sedaris (humorist)
Story Review

Summary: At a party, Sedaris finds himself trying to get rid of a huge turd that was left as a present by the previous visitor to the bathroom.

The collection, Me Talk Pretty One Day, are personal reflections from his life experiences. I am going to review the stories one by one as I read them. I put this book on my Kindle and am reading them one at a time.

I am finding that these stories resonate and this story because of its clarity of the moment and absolute humor, was just amazing. I was laughing out loud. It really was about the potty and it really was so very funny. The author was caught in this horrible situation that anyone of us could have been caught in and it was truly, wickedly funny. This tremendous turd. Yes, the story was about a turd. Nothing is off limits for Sedaris. That is why these stories work so well - nothing off limits.

I was laughing and saying "oh no!" as I read this. No kidding.

I am intrigued by this show that starts on A&E tonight so I am going to check it out. It is a cop drama set in big sky country and adds the complexity of reservation life. They have been promo-ing this all over the place. On TV and in movie theaters. I like the grizzled look of the sheriff and the hope of beautiful scenery there. I think it looks worth checking out the premiere episode anyway. 7pm tonight on A&E.

This is an early trailer. They have been showing a different one. Also - Katee Sackhoff (Starbuck - Battlestar Galactica) is in this too. Could be good!

I edited the first 6000 words of my story today, refining it a bit. I am happy to report that it does not suck and flows pretty well. Not bad. I did have this fear that it did suck and I would have to scrap it but the good news is, the story will work and I am keeping it! Yays!

I just have to figure out where it is going. Small thing, surely?

Longmire (2012)
Television series on A&E

Summary: (A&E website)
Widowed only a year, Longmire is a man in psychic repair that buries his pain behind a brave face and dry wit. Struggling since his wife's death and at the urging of his daughter, Cady, Longmire knows that the time has come to turn his life around. With the help of Vic, a female deputy new to the department, he becomes reinvigorated about his job and committed to running for re-election. When Branch, an ambitious, young deputy decides to run against him for sheriff, Longmire feels betrayed but remains steadfast in his dedication to the community. Longmire often turns to close friend and confidant Henry Standing Bear for support as he sets out to rebuild both his personal and professional life, one step at a time. Robert Taylor stars.

This was a promising opener to a series. Subtle clues give us some key insights into Sheriff Longmire's character - scars on his back in the shower, the tea box in his kitchen repeatedly shown, he reluctantly goes for the coffee. He is a complex man, recently widowed and coming out of a depression due to grief. You can see how effective he is at his job though - his keen attention to detail, reading the signs of nature to track to the body and a real concern for the people in his territory. He really cares about what he is doing and it matters to him. You get the feeling he is coming back into after having been sleep walking for some time but he will get it.

I really enjoyed the layers of interactions - the upstart deputy gunning for his job, the rookie girl complaining about things all the time, his native american friend whose advice saves his life ... really good stuff here and enough to keep me interested. And oh by the way, they rescued the girl out of prostitution and solved the murder. Longmire gets his man.

I am a sucker for a good cop show and the scenery is beautiful. Long shots of Montana. Lovely.
