I have been asked to share from my trip to the Big Island (Hawai'i) and I have been meaning to but I have just been so busy since I got back. Just loads going on. I took notes while I was there of our activities day-by-day. I stole that idea from [livejournal.com profile] khylea who does that whenever she travels and it seems a good practice. It is a way to keep track of places gone and things done etc. I describe things too and think I get more into it as the trip goes along. You will see my entries get a little longer. So here is that.

Then my first pictorial essay is pictures I took of some of the signage I found on the Big Island...subtitle this "Ways You Can Die in Hawaii". These are warning signs, iconic graphics and just amusing wording that just struck me in our travels. I tell you. According to these signs, there are many ways you can die in Hawaii. Morbid thought, but true that. :P You do have to be careful traveling, swimming and hiking there. We definitely heeded these signs and were cautious.

And now onto the pictures, also behind an LJ cut.

Big Island Signage...101...or ways to die in Hawaii... )

Lots of fun to be had in Hawaii, really. We had a great time! :P Hope you enjoyed my post and really...the signs were amusing. I will post more pictures of things we saw etc. Aloha!

So here is my first report on my Hawaiian get away. I have a lot of pictures and am sifting through those but I wanted to first post in about the place that we stayed at. We rented a private house in the Hakalau area of North Hilo (12 miles north of downtown Hilo) and had a great eastward view of the ocean. I woke up every morning at sunrise to see what the colors and the view were doing.

The house was set up like a compound with the living quarters in one area and then the kitchens separate as a free standing house. Strange but it sort of worked well that way. There were three units on the property and we had one of them but the others were only occupied for a few days during our stay...most of the time we had the whole place to ourselves. That was really nice. Full laundry facilities and we cooked a lot of meals and went to local supermarkets and the farmer's market. I lost about 4 pounds on my trip due to all the activity and healthy eating. Go me.

Today's pics are of the house and complex there. More to follow as I resize the photos. Thanks for looking...our house was called Wailea (no meaning there just a place name) and the others had different names -- one other was Hapuna (cannot remember the other one). We also had a swimming pool and jacuzzi in the bathroom.

A great place. We found it on www.vrbo.com should anyone be looking for a house rental. A great site that does rentals all over the world. Highly recommend that one.

This was the view from our lanai as we got ready to go yesterday morning. You can see how one would have a melancholy feeling leaving such a place. Truly beautiful there. Hawai'i is a magical, stunningly beautiful state and I would return there and hope to again. I really enjoyed my time there. I know that there is much more to see. I stayed on the Big Island, the largest and least inhabited of the islands. More updates on my vacation as I get the photos done.

I go back to work today and head into a union action by our local Teamsters at the Univ. More later.
