Chapter Four

The years passed, some many years though to the elves it was all much the same. While time was of a measure to mortal beings, the First Born felt little as decades or centuries were counted and their appearance might not change. They did not show the wearing of the ages.

Elladan and Glorfindel lived in bliss and love as each day their relationship seemed to grow stronger and more meaningful. They fought many battles side by side, lived companionably together and loved as though each day could be their last, with a desperation born of their intense passion for one another.

When they had to spend time apart their reunions were intense. Having been away, they would fall into each other’s arms and need time secluded to rekindle their undying passion.

/---/

I miss Glorfindel with every fiber of my being. He has been so long away this time to Lothlórien at the behest of my father. We could not both go, as that would leave Imladris vulnerable. Diplomatic missions seem so tiresome and tedious. It will be some months until he returns. What am I to do here all alone?

Pine, I will pine away in sorrow.

/---/

Elladan found solace many a night in the company of other elves at the Hall of Fire. It was a place where one could seek out revelry, have some libation while listening to the finest minstrels in all of Middle Earth, nay the world. People were always milling about and there was the constant sound of excellent music. The lone elf could be found in the crowds gathered most nights; rather than sit alone in the rooms he shared with Glorfindel. His mate would not want him to grow melancholy in his absence and his friends were all to be found in the Hall.

One particular evening, Lindir sang an especially beautiful love song of a bygone age and Elladan could have sworn that the minstrel sang it to him. Did their eyes meet as the musician played his lute and strummed its strings, his voice carrying the story of love lost and then met again? The son of Elrond imagined he did and found himself caught up in the song, its story and the strong voice which carried the notes. His reverie was interrupted by the applause at the end of the tune and he started. The spell was broken, another came to sing and Elladan glanced around him to see if anyone else had noticed anything untoward.

No one seemed the wiser and so he lifted his wine to his lips to sip, pondering this circumstance. He did not know what he should do about this but ambled off to his empty bed to ruminate.

/---/

Erestor also was in the Hall that night as luck would have it, seated directly behind the elder twin son of Elrond, one seat behind his left shoulder. What Elladan did not know was that the Counselor was a faithful listener to Lindir’s music, an ardent appreciator one might say. They were close friends or something more. The minstrel would often look to Erestor as he sang. He could count on the dark-haired elf’s reliable presence and it was like a balm to his very soul. Neither of them had voiced the words but it was likely that they were very much in love.

It was a look between these lovers that Elladan intercepted unaware that the sentiment was not meant for him, hence his confusion and misconception.

/---/

I have been in clandestine observation of the minstrel. I cannot confirm nor deny any special regard but for what occurred the other night. He spends a good deal of time in the company of one Erestor, Chief Counselor of Imladris. They work together in the office, eat together in the dining hall and I believe they had tea yesterday. Erestor is in the Hall of Fire each night where I have been. He sits right behind me in his customary seat.

Lindir has made no special attempt to seek out my company but is oft in the company of this other elf. What am I missing?

/---/

Elladan chanced to look out his window as he wrote his last sentence and there, in the very same spot where he had first met Glorfindel, he spied two elves meeting in the garden, one dark haired and one with red hair. Erestor and Lindir grasped hands, moved close and kissed under the arbor. It was a very private moment but the half elf could not help but watch the two lovers meet and embrace. The afternoon sun shone through the trees and gave a magical aspect to the scene.

Viewing them thus made Elladan long for his own far away love more. He sat with his chin in his hand gazing through the pane of glass, imagining being kissed that way for the first time. He’d had a moment like this himself and could not begrudge it to another. He was happy for Erestor and Lindir and sighed with contentment.

Soon his love would be home and all would be well.

/---/

Elladan pummeled Glorfindel’s shoulder, as one should when one is being laughed at, not a delicate giggle either but a full-bellied laugh. Recently arrived back to Imladris, Glorfindel was breathless with amusement at his love’s mistaken romance with one Lindir, talented minstrel of Imladris.

“I cannot believe you thought Lindir was looking at you in that way, Elladan. Everyone knows he is mad for Erestor, has been for an age!”

“Everyone but me so it seems. Why am I the last to know?”

“Not very observant, are you?”

“I guess not.” Elladan sulked on his pillow, curled away from Glorfindel. He could not look upon that amused, superior expression anymore, much as he had missed him. It was more than he could take. They would now spend their first night together sleeping as cold bedfellows when they should be romping amorously in pursuit of mutual pleasure.

Glorfindel slid close behind his mate, letting him feel the full evidence of his desire and passion at their reunion.

“Forgive me for laughing at you, my love. Let’s not waste tonight.”

After some convincing in the form of nibbles to his ear along with caresses to his neck and shoulders, Elladan finally relented. He turned in his lover’s arms, pressing his hips against Glorfindel’s, letting him feel his burgeoning need. They proceeded to make love long into the night and did not get one wink of sleep.

Some years pass…

/---/

I am happy to report that Lindir and Erestor were married today. I withstood the jibes and jokes from Glorfindel as best I could wishing the couple long life and happiness. I don’t think they need to know of my mistake in the Hall of Fire that night, do you? There is such a thing as too much honesty and they can remain none the wiser.

I can only wish them as much joy as I have with Glorfindel. We are truly happy together. He is my light, he is my love for now and all time.

The End
