This week two people (one of them my poppa) I know crashed and lost all their files and data and this is so not necessary. I am reposting this as a PSA. Really, you don't have to lose anything as this program allows you to run your computer when you are disabled...and SALVAGE your data yourself. Read on...and make a knoppix disc today. You will be happy you did. This is a free utility program. Anyways...hope this helps someone on my flist.

I am posting this and probably will do this routinely as a public service announcement as my sort of geek advice to my friends list. If you do not have a disk of knoppix in your arsenal of software you keep in case of a computer crash, you should, you really should. This free utility will allow you to run a crashed computer, salvage your data and operate on a disabled computer.

It is a linux based, freeware operating system that basically will let your machine operate as if it is not disabled so that you can get things done. Here are examples of what happened to me and why I am a strong proponent of having a bootable DVD of this around (I have two versions of this right now).

Anecdotal evidence:
First time, my hard drive crashed. I called my friend M**** freaking out and he gave me this knoppix disc (bootable DVD). My computer was under warranty so while I waited for Gateway to get me my new drive, I was able to operate my computer with knoppix and do the following:

-use their host browser and surf the internet
-chat with my friends on their IM program
-salvage my files from the disabled drive and move my images to CD's and flash drives
-I lost no data. No data at all.
-I ran for 10 days while I waited for my new HD to arrive. Not kidding.

Second time: my external hard drive was knocked by a workman off a table and onto the floor. It became unreadable in windows. This drive had all my images on it. I was able to boot up with knoppix and salvage ALL of my images. While it was not readable in windows, it was readable in the knoppix utilities and I could move all of my files onto my laptops HD. Saved everything. It did not fix the external but again, I lost no data when the drive failed.

So I urge anyone who has ever had computer issues or even if you never have had a failure...make your self a DVD of this software and keep this in a safe place with your programs discs. Then if the worst thing happens...and you do have a failure...you are covered.

Here is the link for the program. You can make your own disc or for a really small fee they will send you a disc of the latest version. I say make your own and don't pay a thing but get this. It is a lifesaver.

End of PSA but let me know how you do with this. And really, I hope you never need this but if it helps you at all...I will be glad to know you have it and you will be glad to have it when you need it.

Cheers.

Yep yep! It is a lifesaver. Do yourself a favor - make a disc for yourself too or just order the one online. It is good to have it chica. You don't need it til you really need it. So get it for YOU too.

*pokes* I have a few copies of it lying around.

I got one from someone else but I ordered one through them and had them send me one. I never have made my own. So I don't know. I have to say, it is worth it to have it.
