I guess in light of the QAF thing and that issue, I should get real but I don't reveal all that many details that can actually pinpoint me online as I don't believe in that. I am an event planner, fan fic writing, elf-Tolkien loving kind of person. I try not to link with my actual identity so as to keep my slash writing tendencies away from my FB account and the real world. I don't feel that I really misrepresent myself as I am Phyncke and Phyncke I am. I am a middle aged female from the Bay Area. That is about all you are going to get. Along with my thoughts and feelings as expressed here in this journal. I have dabbled in the Terminator fandom but always used my journal constructed name as my pen name.

Not very dramatic but I am not making people up. That takes a lot of energy that I don't have. We all have a story about people that have done this and I am sure that it will happen again. This is the nature of the internet where people can use smoke and mirrors and be who they want to be and not who they really are. I guess that is the fantasy.

Anyhoo. This is it, my getting real post. This is it, that's all you get. :P

Not to me - someone died and it was revealed that they had created two personnas online so they had faked some identities. Just a thing. It has been on the flist but I guess you missed it. They published stories under the fake names but also had some relationships etc. Big fakey thing going on.

Humm, I do try to scan my flist in the morning before I go to work, but no mentioning of *that* Unless it is about something that happened in our Tolkien corner with Lady Roisin...

Ugh, I read that QaF thing. Reminded me of House of Feanor and the crap she pulled. Bleh.

I know you are realz.

I agree, it will happen again, but thankfully the occurrences are rare. I tend to believe people are who they say they are. I could not even begin to think of second guessing everyone :D

I know and the energy to construct all that. Why bother? I don't have the time to.

when I was still in school and internet was still very new to me, me and friend went into a chat room, where we pretended to be a guy from Japan living in South Germany. that was the first and last time I pretended to be someone I'm not (besides playing online RPG, but I guess that's something different, right?)

but then again I learned that I'm not the same person online than I am in real life, since I'm different when I'm actually meeting with people. *shrug* I don't know.

but I haven't heard about this QAF thing, just read what you wrote in the other comments. I'm always surprised how people can start a relationship with a fake personality. like... I would need to at least have a video chat with someone I have a relationship with...

I don't think RPGs count as those are character based. That is all fiction. I think we are all constructs on LJ to some extent but I have met people through here and I am basically "me" to some extent just what I want people to know, you know. Not some whole different thing.

Chat rooms are also a different thing. I have done those though they made me nervous so I stopped. I don't like them.

I actually think I'm more myself on the internet than in the real world.

when the internet was still pretty new there wasn't much else to do than chats. but it wasn't really my thing, so I'm not really missing it.

Did I miss something here? I haven't really been on so if you've posted something in regards to this post I must have missed it?

I think someone else who is not on your flist would have posted about it. Someone in the Queer as Folk fandom passed away and it came out that she was posting fiction as two authors and had created two "people" online. So she created these fake identities and was maintaining them for years and people believed that they were real people etc. Happens all the time, I am sure but it just came out recently. That is it. That is what all the hubbub was about. Yeppers. I am sure there are people who are lying about themselves online...you never know.
