Thor (2011)
Based on Marvel Comics
DVD Movie Review
In anticipation of the Avengers movie coming out this week, I am watching the individual Avenger hero movies that I have on DVD. Tonight's selection is Thor, in all his Nordic goodness.
This is where Nordic legends meet Marvel Universe as the Nordic god Thor is on the scene. This movie is masterfully and beautifully directed by Kenneth Branagh, a wonderful actor in his own right. Starring Chris Helmsford is the lead character and Anthony Hopkins as the all father, Odin, this movie really packs it.
I have watched this movie alot, from start to finish and it pieces. I love it. It is beautifully done with sets and costumes that bring the Nordic legends stunningly to life. The light and ice plays visually to maintain visual interest. Ultimately this story is about a father who is trying to teach a lesson to his son. Thor through his arrogance makes a horrible mistake and trangression and loses his powers. Odin casts him out and to Earth where he hopes he will learn and earn his powers back. What is so fun to watch here, is Thor navigating the mortal world. This is portrayed with humor and a bit of kitsch.
A side note on the villain here. Loki, raised beside Thor as his brother, yet an orphan recovered in a battle with Asgard's enemy is almost a Shakespearean level evil and it goes deep. Betraying his adoptive father and brother to the Frost Giants as he is one himself and ultimately turning on them too. It is despicable and razor sharp. He whispers, connives and plots so much like Iago that it is a parallel to one of the great tragedies.
There are scenes I play over and over - Thor without his shirt on, Thor getting his powers back in dramatic fashion. But I can watch this movie repeatedly from start to finish. It is always interesting and always lovely. I think it is my favorite of the Avenger films.
A note on Natalie Portman - fun to watch here and I just adore it when she snogs him at the end. Hell yeah - I would too!
Thumbs up on this one!
