The Raven
Loosely based on the work of Edgar Allan Poe and parts of his life
Movie Review

I am on the fence about this movie. I really am. My lasting impression is of the really bad end credit music and modern shattered glass moving modern art stuff at the end. That is popping into my mind, almost to the point where it obliterates my sense of this movie. I am not kidding. The end credit sequence after the movie, frankly s*cked. Did not fit with the film and were just bad. I am going to try and move beyond this and write a review of the film.

This is a movie where you have Edgar Allan Poe at the end of his life, drunk, destitute, adrift and bereft of writing ideas. He lives in Baltimore, MD. A series of murders takes place that are based on his stories. This is the basic crux of the idea for the film. Mr. Fields, dreamy detective, enlists the writer's help in solving the crimes. The murders, as are Poe's stories, are gruesome and brutal and maniacal.

I don't know if it all holds together. This is very gruesome and gothic and they pull the murderer out of the air with no clues - well one clue right before or I totally missed the hints. I am usually observant so I am thinking the clues were not there. The one clue was remarked on and evident.

John Cusack gave a solid performance as Poe. It was a pleasure to watch him recite The Raven on film. I really enjoyed that. I was fascinated by the detective - Mr. Fields played by Luke Evans. He is gorgeous and a good actor. I found I really enjoyed watching him. Solid performances all around. Nice period outfits, masquerade ball but I don't know what makes this special. I am guessing no one else thought so as the theater was empty on the opening weekend of this film and we went to the 8pm show.
