I am testing the cross-post function from dreamwidth and also providing the following resource. This is a nifty little LJ archiving tool called LJ Archive. You download it to your computer and it allows you to archive a formatted and searchable version of your journal to your hard drive. Dreamwidth disabled the importing of journals due to the DDOS thing so this is a second option for saving your journal, if you are so inclined. I have not read enough on this to know if you can restore the journal back into LJ or another blogging site but this is something.

http://sourceforge.net/projects/ljarchive/

I hope that you find this helpful.

Cheers.

*a post script - this utility relies on LJ's servers for the back up. You have to log in to lj from the script and it backs up your journal. While LJ is having trouble, this utility will have trouble backing up your journal so keep that in mind and try at different times to get your journal back up.*

Hi, came through DW's Latest Things. Shouldn't it be "LJ doesn't have bandwith right now to allow the importing of journals"? DW disabled it because LJ keeps timing out because of the DDOS.

*sighs* Yeah it would suck to lose all those posts...:( Hopefully the people backing the attacks will run out of money soon.

You are wonderful I just installed the archiver and archived my first LJ account that has been laying dormat for years but didn't want to just delete it. Now that I have a copy I can go in and just delete it. That account only had 332 entries, WildRoseDragon has over 1300, so it is taking a bit longer. Awesome program. Thank You.

Oh, WOW. I really hope things don't fall apart here at LJ. *sigh*

Thanks, for this!

I don't know if they will but this is good for backing up your journal just in case. :)

Totally bummed that DW disabled the imports but it's understandable. I will definitely check this out. Thanks for posting.

This is just for a usable back up and someone up-comment says it works so that is good.

Ah, it's just a temporary disabling of the imports. That makes more sense. Hopefully things will clear up in a few days.

I have had problems with LJArchive since using Windows 7. It only partially downloads.

Ah, maybe that's my problem too. I only got a tiny bit of my journal.

I have tried a couple of download programs and they all do the same thing - I suspect it is a server issue.

I wondered what had happened to the import thing. Poop. I'm only archived up to 2009 on DW.

The archive tool doesn't seem to work for me, it only downloaded 200 entries and no comments. *Sadface*

This came up on a search for a DL tool for windows 7 so it should work for that too. Sorry. It worked for someone else on here and has worked for me in the past not with windows 7. Not sure what to tell you.

I think Binky is right and it's a server problem... I tried it on hubby's XP laptop and it still didn't work.

I almost got it to work this morning and got a partial DL of my journal but then it quit. I am going to keep trying. I think it is hit or miss with the LJ side of things. The utility appears to be working actually. I don't think LJ archive is the problem.

It finally worked for me... I think you just have to catch the server at the right moment!

Oh good! I will keep trying it then.

It is good but right now it is hard to get it to work as LJ is unreliable. So you have to keep trying it. I am having trouble getting it to work so keep that in mind. It only works if the LJ server will allow it to grab your journal info.
