Movie Review - Contagion!
Oct. 10th, 2011 09:07 pmSo I will get over my last post and write a quick review of Contagion. I have always been fascinated by CDC stuff so this movie held a certain appeal. That and the fact that Gwyneth Paltrow meets an early, painful death, though she "appears" in the entire film through very beautiful and effective flashbacks and non-chronological sequences. This movie tracks the path of a highly contagious flu that ultimately kills those who get it.... it spreads to epic proportions and kills millions. State of emergency declared etc. We have never seen this kind of thing in reality but it could happen...that much is clear from the film...it really could happen. Shifts in the environment and species of animals put together cause the mutation.
We see the insider CDC stuff, their agents in the field, the epidemiologists tracking the origin of the epidemic. To me, really interesting stuff. We also see the researchers in the lab as they try to isolate, replicate and create the vaccine to contain this flu. I really enjoyed the day-by-day structure of the movie and how it moved in chronology....time was fluid and we end...well I won't give that away, suffice to say, time is very interesting in this film and illuminating.
I now have a very real urge to go get a flu shot tomorrow, which I am going to do. I really am. This film also reminds me to frequently wash my hands and not touch my face so much. Germs oh the germs!
Lots of star power in this film - Elliot Gould, Gwyneth Paltrow, Lawrence Fishburn, Jennifer Ehle, Matt Damon, Kate Winslet. All great performances. Lesser known actors all really good too. Solid film.
