Story Arc: Nocturnes
Part: Story 6
Title: Wasteland
Author: phyncke
Character/Pairing: John Connor
Beta: aglarien
Rating: G
Warnings: None
Summary: John Connor surveys the barren landscape
Disclaimer: Based on the Terminator movie verse started by James Cameron and in its latest iteration by McG (Salvation). No profit is made here.
Author Notes: Double drabble plus of 273. Evolving series.
The leader looked out across the land, so barren. Dust blew up as the wind gusted, and there was vegetation to stop the soil erosion. This planet would recover but slowly. They would win it back, inch by inch, their blood spilling on the parched ground of the post-Judgment Day earth, where life was not sustainable. He saw only burned out cars, wreckage and charred remains of the fallen.
They grew food underground in high yield, hydroponic farms, tended carefully and the crop stored for distribution throughout the resistance. Seeds had been found stockpiled by the D.O.D. in case of such eventualities. Someone had had the foresight, and seen the need. Now they replenished the seed supply with each harvest. Water was drawn from two sources – captured from rainfall and filtrated or from further underground where they drilled to tap the water table. These procedures were elemental to their survival and the perpetuation of the human race.
John hoped that some day, after this all, they would once again farm the land above ground. He envisioned the beauty of trees, could recall lying in the grass and the sound of birdsong. He had done that, once. Now it was all laid waste.
He looked to remind himself; he remembered to keep hope. John Connor went inside to broadcast his daily message, as he did every night. He sat down, flipped the switch and the radio crackled to life. He held the microphone to his mouth, pressing the side button to transmit.
“This is John Connor and if you can hear me, then you are the resistance…”
