Movie Review - Dredd
Sep. 22nd, 2012 01:42 pmSo I saw the movie Dredd last night with Karl Urban as the main character. Set in a futuristic city in North America where the police are police and and judges and known as Judges, Dredd is a total bad as enforcer of the law. So this movie was made to be a 3D movie and we did not see it in 3D. I almost want to see it again in 3D so I can see the cool effects in 3D. This is an ultra-violent film. In this universe - the Judges have the power to determine the sentence as they are enforcing the law - be it incarceration or execution. This is because crime has gotten so out of hand. Justice is swift, instaneous.
So you never get to see Karl Urban's face in this film (he wears a protective helmet the whole time), well you see his sneering mouth, but he is so good and bad a** in this film. He totally rocks it. His voice is perfect - flat, gravelly and rough. My friend, who has read the Dredd comics, said that he was good in this role.
The violence is graphic and slow mo. The cinematography interesting and at some points stunningly beautiful. I will not give away any plot points but Karl Urban fans should definitely see this film. He is in every scene really - there are maybe two scenes that he is not in, literally.
So thumbs up on this one as a sci-fi, justice flick based on a comic universe. I really liked it.
On a side note - it was filmed in South Africa - I found that interesting. Cape Town, South Africa. It is mainly interiors so it was a studio film. Some information on that is on this Wiki - I noticed that at the end of the credits and found this:
