Rock of Ages (2012)

Summary: (in part from IMDB)
A small town girl and a city boy meet on the Sunset Strip, while pursuing their Hollywood dreams. The scene focuses on the Bourbon, a classic Rock and Roll club and efforts by the mayor's wife to close down this club.

I really was not sure about this movie but I totally enjoyed this. The songs are all 80's rock and roll covers and so well done - bands like Journey, Def Leppard and stuff like that, Jefferson Airplane and very well staged. I just really enjoyed this. For a musical you have to suspend belief when the characters burst into song but this works really well here.

But the capper of it all is watching Tom Cruise playing Stacee Jaxx. Those concert scenes and his performance here. Just amazing. I have complicated feelings about Tom Cruise. I fundamentally disagree with him on just about everything but he is a great actor. I forget all about his real life stuff when I see him act...he totally transforms into Stacee Jaxx and I believe he is a rock and roll star. I have read that he modeled his performance on Axl Rose and I think it totally works. Not to mention that he looks beautiful while he does this. See this for the concert parts alone. So great.

There are a few romances in this film, even a M-M one that totally surprised me. Russell Brand was great here and his facial expressions just totally worked for this film.

This movie totally entertains and rocks. It was good and fun to see these old songs brought to life. It does work! Yays!

I am expanding into more cultural areas for my culture vulture posts. This is a music video. I heard this song on the radio while I was driving one day and immediately downloaded it onto my iphone. I love to walk to this song and listen to it when I am heading into work. It definitely moves and gets the blood flowing. The video has some cool graphical imagery.
