Please stand up in support of higher education by rejecting further cuts to our public colleges and universities.
If an "all-cuts" state budget is approved, Gov. Brown has said that the University of California's funding cut would double to $1 billion.
A cut of that magnitude would be devastating for our students, their families and the millions of Californians who are relying on UC services and job-creating innovations to spur the state's economic recovery.
The university has been preparing program cutbacks, staff layoffs, efficiency initiatives and other financial strategies to deal with the $500 million cut already approved in its 2011-12 state funding package.
As the governor noted in his budget documents, further cuts could result in tuition increases at both UC and CSU of more than 30 percent next year. That is unacceptable to me and the many deserving students in your district who would be shut out of an education because of financial hardship.
Thank you for your consideration.
