phyncke: (Captain Jack Bugger)
My computer went boom last night. I was happily on-line chatting last night when all of a sudden it rebooted and I got the dread message "disc read error" and could not get it to boot up windows again. I could hear the drive chug-chugging and trying to read things. It is just such a horrible thing. So I call my own personal computer geek, Michael. I thought, "He will fix it, he knows everything." Well he cannot fix it. He says it is toast but he can give me this nifty program called KNOPPIX that I can run on my computer so that I can be business as usual while I try and get things fixed up here. I can browse, chat and all that jazz. I just have to save things onto those little external drives for now. I spent hours last night saving files with him at his house. The drive kept failing as we tried to get things off. I got the most important things off. My writing and my created works. So that is good.

What a freaking nightmare.

I have to call Gateway today and see how to get this handled. It is within warranty so they better fix this pronto. I kept my old computer in case this very thing happened. I guess I will be hooking up my macintosh while I send this one out for repair.

I apologize to anyone I was chatting with when the computer went. I blipped out in a hurry....

AUGHHHHHH!!!

UPDATE!!!

Houston....we have a solution.

I spent some time on the phone with Gateway this morning. They were very nice and very helpful. The computer is in fact in warranty so I am covered. Blessed be. They are going to send a new hard drive and I will get it within two days. They think I should be able to install it myself. *snort* I will have my geek friend help me with it.

In the meantime I am going to try and recover more files off of my old hard drive. I will have to reload the software from a recovery disc that I have and all that.

All is not lost but I am losing data. Music files and photographs. Oh well. Luckily I have all those photos at work and can put them on a disc. So those are recoverable.

I will be running on KNOPPIX for a while...so if I am slow, that is why.

Kill my hard drive, kill my hard drive....
