phyncke: (Coffee Steaming)
I am a weak willed person and the thing is I have been so strong so far. Every day I walk by this donut shop on my way to work. They have these locally made donuts that are so much better than Crispy Kremes. I mean bigger, fluffier...more everything. Reowr! Well I finally could not take it anymore and for the low, low price of 75 cents I bought myself a slice of heaven. I found a picture of a donut on-line but it does not really do it justice. I ate this at my desk at work and enjoyed every little bite.

Who put the hole in the donut... )

Unbelievable but funny enough to be true...
There is a funny legend in my family about donuts. Supposedly my ancestor Hanson Gregory is the one who invented the hole in the donut. My mother loves to tell this one. He was a sailor and they used to eat this pastry which was like a donut but sans the hole. Well in order to drink his coffee, eat the pastry and sail hold on to the railing in rough seas he would ram the thing onto his thumb and create a hole in the pastry so that his finger would come through the other side. Hence, the hole in the donut was born. Now I do not know if this is true but it makes a good story.

But soft! This is what I found on google! My family is on GOOGLE! *jumps around*

The town of Clam Cove, Maine has a plaque in honor of Captain Hanson Gregory, the man who is most often credited with inventing the hole in the donut. Legend has it that in 1847, he was enjoying a donut at the helm of his ship when a big storm came up. Needing the use of both hands, he crammed the donut onto one of the wheel's spokes, thus creating the hole.

I do not know which version is true. The spoke of the wheel seems a little big...*scratches head*

You pick what to believe. Heh. I guess this has turned into a factoid of sorts. There you go!

More donut factoids:

1. Dunkin' Donuts sells more than six million donuts per day which is approximately a whopping 2.3 billion per year.

2. Dunkin' Donuts sells almost 6.4 millon donuts every day. In a year, this is enough to circle the earth twice.

3. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the record for donut eating is held by John Haight, who consumed 52 ounces of donuts (29) in just over six minutes in 1981.

*sigh* I miss Dunkin Donuts.

Eww. On the donut eating dude. I could not even finish one donut in an hour. Just gross.

All factoids are from the web site: http://home.no.net/smart2/alliesenemies.html. I give credit, where credit is due.
