42/100 Prometheus (movie review)
Prometheus (2012)
Directed by Ridley Scott
Summary: (from IMDB)
A team of explorers discover a clue to the origins of mankind on Earth, leading them on a journey to the darkest corners of the universe. There, they must fight a terrifying battle to save the future of the human race.
I see all the Alien movies, no matter what as I am a devotee of this series. Even though I cringe and hide my way through the film because they are seriously scary and kind of gross in the icky alien category. This one did not disappoint in that way. Things jumped out, things oozed and there was lots of different alien things conceived to get you going here. All sorts of Geiger goodness in the production value of this movie...set and setting of the aliens. Good and creepy that.
I liked it but I will cut for some of my thoughts on this film
The plot was tied to a higher search, the search for the origin of man and it turns out that the alien beings responsible for the aliens are genetic engineers who create species all over the universe. They also create the aliens as their biological weapon to eradicate species and keep them in check. It becomes clear that they were going to send the "weapon" to earth to wipe us out. I wonder how the Alien fandom feels about the malevolent motivation of these beings as this was not at all evident in the original film.
The aliens themselves take so many forms and they would have to be very very fast mutating to achieve the form they did in the later movie. The final alien in this film does achieve a form close to that but that is really a fast mutation. I guess that is the idea but it seemed too much to me. I don't know how that works really as it seems mutations would take time. But I guess the idea of the alien species is that it can mutate rapidly.
My last spoiler issue here is that this film does place our alien person in the position where the Nostromo crew found him so I am not sure where this fits into the sequence. We see that seat and the crash but he dies somewhere else. I was totally waiting for him to die in the chair of his ship. So perhaps that is not the one they found? I don't know. It does not fit with the next movie, is all I am saying. I wanted that to be neater, and fit like a jigsaw puzzle. I wanted that ahh moment and to see where they would find him there. No ahh.
I really enjoyed the casting of this film but felt they did not spend enough time getting us to like the crew of Prometheus as they had in previous films. We did not know them well enough to really care about them so much. No scenes of them interacting and bonding etc. That did not gel for me so much as it had in previous films and especially Alien. And for this reason, they were all expendable and it was no surprise when they all start to die. I had no attachment to them - maybe to the lead girl. Anyways. This was a serious weakness in the film. In the first Alien movie - you totally care that they are dying. Maybe we are so jaded in watching an Alien film now that we expect them all to die. Hmm.
Anyways...it is a good movie but I have ambivalent feelings about it. It works as a movie, some interesting ideas but as an Alien fan it opens more questions than it answers.

Overall rating:
An interesting installation of the series.
Recommend:
If you are into these movies.
Warnings:
Serious ooze and ick factor.
