In a world where vampires have "come out of the coffin", Sookie Stackhouse, a telepathic waitress, discovers a new world of different creatures when she meets Bill Compton, a vampire.

This season - vampires seek dominance over humans.

I feel like I have to watch True Blood but I am not liking the direction of this show and what they have done with the characters. I really hope that they pull this out in the last episodes. Just wanted to put this out there. No spoilers just a statement, review, whatever. Kind of suck on True Blood this season. Only bonus is lots of shots of Alcide with his shirt off. That works for me.

Franklin and Bash (2011 - 2012)

Summary: IMDB
Lawyers and lifelong friends Jared Franklin and Peter Bash are recruited by a large firm's major partner after winning a high-profile case.

So I really want to call this just another show about two white male lawyers in a prestigious law firm. And it is about two white lawyers in a prestigious law firm...but this show is very well done. I don't want to watch it but I find myself totally entertained everytime and keep watching. It has one of my favorite actors in it - Breckin Meyer - and he has just amazing comedic timing and the second lead Mark Paul Gosselaer is easy on the eyes and pretty funny too. Fun cameo role by Malcolm MacDowell as the head partner of the law firm and interesting supporting roles fill out the racial mosaic of the show and character portraits here. The case load is interesting and what I really like is the best friend element to this show - Franklin and Bash really are total buds and that comes through. This show is fun to watch and I go back to it each week without fail. So I am giving this a good review on entertainment, laughs and interest. There it is!

The Closer (2005-2012)
Last Five Episodes

Summary: IMDB
Deputy Police Chief Brenda Johnson runs the Priority Homicide Division of the LAPD with an unorthodox style. Her innate ability to read people and obtain confessions helps her and her team solve the city's toughest, most sensitive cases.

I cannot believe that The Closer is on its last five episodes. What can you say about the character of Brenda Lee Johnson - the tenacious investigator who heads up Los Angeles Major Crimes. She is flawed, she has a sugar addiction but she closes her cases. I have been following this show for quite some time and it really revolves around this very strong central character played by Kyra Sedgwick. She is really great here in playing a strong female lead with guts and determination. I will be sorry to see this character go but I have enjoyed her performance in this role. Hats off Brenda Lee and you have worn some great hats!

Note - there is going to be a new show called Major Crimes with some of the supporting cast from this show less the Brenda Lee character. I will check that out and let you know how that is. I am unsure how that will work without this strong central character to anchor the show. Have to see on that.

Summary: IMDB
Dr. Daniel Pierce is an eccentric neuroscientist who uses his unique outlook to help the federal government solve complex criminal cases.

I really enjoyed this program! I have been enjoying the little previews through the trailers they have been showing all along and now WOW. Here it is - this is a subtly nuanced and quirky performance by (I cannot call him Will) Erin McCormack (formerly on Will and Grace). He is a college professor, neuroscientist and I love how the show begins and ends with his lecture. So much goodness here - we have tidbits of neuroscience, his mental illness and visions infultrate his life and he is a functionally mental ill eccentric who is brilliant. It is amazing to watch this actor in this role. I just think he is wonderful in this role. Lots to hold your interest, lots to like and he is funny all along. Just great. And by the way, they solve the crime.

I will for sure be watching this. I have it set to record on my DVR so I won't miss this. Love this show! Have I said this? Love it!

Summary: (from IMDB)
A well-known psychic becomes a consultant for the California Bureau of Investigation to help solve crimes and to find "Red John," the madman who killed his wife and daughter.

So - there is a marathon of this show on TNT today and I thought I would review it. This show has a strong central character in the vein of Sherlock Holmes - who solves crimes utilizing his keen powers of observation. Example - he figures out that a man in a wheelchair is not paralyzed by noticing the marks on the soles of his shoes from walking. Very neat on the details this show is. He has a bit of the tormented soul about him as he is motivated to get the killer of his family. I prefer the shows that are not Red John focused and love the stand alone ones that veer away from that story line. I really wish that story line had rapped a little faster. I tended to not watch the Red John shows and tended to watch the independent story line shows. Those are lighter and Patrick Jane is funnier there - and that is when the show is best - when Patrick is funny, witty and "on". Really good supporting cast in this show - and the team is solid. I really like watching this show as they solve the crimes they are faced with.

Person makes the decision not to smoke and the mini rock band plays "I just want to celebrate" another day of living...

I find this ad campaign really motivating and really motivating on the quitting smoking thing. The whole thing hinges on that decision not to have another cigarette and then there is that little rock band that plays your victory song when you make the right decision not to smoke. There are a couple of versions of the ad that I have seen and I love all of them. I just love the little rock band. I mean is the person delusional and seeing the rock band? No, I think it is just a metaphor. Kind of cool?

Keeping Up with the Kardashians (2007 - now)

Summary: (me)
The daily life of the Kardashians, reality TV show.

I found myself watching this today and felt compelled to write a review of this. Honestly, I watched it, why not review it? Let it be known that this review is biased by my anti-Kardashian feelings. I really cannot stand them. On the episodes I happened to watch, they were vacationing in the Dominican Republic.

I am struck by what this show does not do - they don't take any opportunities to educate viewers on the locations they go to, show scenery outside of their compound or do anything of social value. Why should I expect that? I mean they are the Kardashians. They really just want to show off how rich they are and how they can afford to have every meal made for them and served to them in luxury. They never cook but they always eat. This is not really "reality" TV because reality for most people is the minutiae of life and getting by. This is a glimpse into the how the rich and famous do it.

In terms of who I like best on here - Kim Kardashian is not so bad really. She is reasonable. Kourtney is a bit OCD and controlling. The mother is also controlling and wants things her own way. That is about as deep into it as I can get. Honestly - they are terrible but I found myself interested enough to watch but I do wonder at the US and why these people are famous. Although they really do have a knack at packaging themselves - they are really good at that and at manipulating the public. Famous for being famous. That is pretty good. Bruce Jenner seems sad here and somewhat pathetic...

Anyways. I hate them but I had to watch or was it just because I had nothing else to do? Maybe that was it. I don't know. Inconclusive review in a drug induced haze.

Summary:
Jane Rizzoli, detective and Moira Isles, coroner, solve crimes in Boston, MA. Based on detective books about Jane Rizzoli by Terri Gerritzen.

This is sort of a standard format cop drama but I really like this show. It reminds me of my home town, Boston, MA and the whole feeling of Boston. Lots of family stuff in this show as we get to know the Rizzoli's, a down home police family. Moira Isles comes from a society family and as the coroner and medical examiner has a medical background. I like that this has female role models.

I don't know why I like this so much by I am enjoying the characters. The cases are not that exceptional or interesting either but I tune into this every time and watch it. I think I really like the relationships of the characters and the sense of community here.

Chef Gordon Ramsey reforms and renovates failing restaurants.

So I heart this show and I heart Gordon Ramsey. He is asked into these terrible restaurants and he has to eat their terrible food, inspect their dirty premises and then turn them around. Other shows have copied this format but no one has the strength of personality that Ramsey does. He rants, he swears but he always comes up with elegant menus, beautiful redesigns of the location and turns these people around. It is often times painful for the owners who have put their lives into their restaurants but I get the feeling that Gordon Ramsey really cares about his work and wants them to succeed. Not for the weak of heart as some health code violations, roaches, rats and rancid food. Really gross stuff sometimes.

ep 3 - The Price You Pay

Summary: (from IMDB)
The story focuses on the offspring of bitter rivals and brothers JR and Bobby Ewing, who clash over the future of the Ewing dynasty while the fate of Southfork itself weighs in the balance.

So we are three episodes into this and the plot thickens. Bobby is still his good self and JR and young JR go to the barber for a shave. Razor wielding JR senior solidifies his alliance with his son and vows to teach him all the things he needs to know. Good stuff here on the fraternal stuff. Everyone seems to want to move back to South Fork even though it is being sold, go figure. Conniving, manipulation and all that good stuff. Love triangle and a kiss caught on the cell phone. Anyways. I am hooked on this or will record it to watch when I have time. Cliff Barnes makes an appearance and they did not use enough make up on him. He looks terrible. The show is a little too geriatric almost but I guess they cannot help that with the aging actor thing. Bobby looks good but some people are not holding up well. I wonder if it would have been advised to feature the younger set and do cameos for the older generation. Wondering that now. Hot young actors are better for ratings. I do like the young JR actor - he seems driven and ambitious and he is easy on the eyes.

Anyways - just some thoughts as this continues. The plot is secondary to the back stabbing really. The good son made a break through on his alternative energy plan. That is good.

I like this I guess with some of the provisos above on what they could have done to make this more sellable.

Show Summary:
A man poses as a therapist to help people get over their worst fears and he kills them with their actual worst fear. Serial killer.

I was not going to watch this one, as I have seen it before but it is a very interesting episode. The killer is a therapist who has childhood issues with fear himself and kills people in the throes of their worst fears realized. He posts ads in local stores and laundrymats in the guise of doing a "study" on the topic and helping people get over their fears and thus entraps unsuspecting people in his web. Scary stuff. He takes notes as he works on people and each kill is customized for the specific person - one person is afraid of water, another afraid of being buried alive and so on. You can see how it goes. The killer in this episode is well done and very clinical in his approach, he stages his office in an empty office building and constructs the ruse very well.

Very creepy. This show sometimes is almost too creepy.

So I have always been resistant to CSI with all their spin offs but I caught some old episodes of CSI Miami today and I have to write something about this. Horatio Kane (David Caruso) is a really compelling character and Miami is a truly interesting setting for this show. I love the scenery and panoramic shots of Florida here. I guess I am finally getting what this is all about.

One of the shows I caught was the flashback episode and the formation of the CSI unit. Now this was really interesting because Kane is just a regular Homicide cop here but he uses creative forensics methods which get him the attention of higher ups. They give him the go ahead to form the Crime Scene Investigation Unit in Miami based on these new techniques that he is using. This episode was very good and very interesting.

I used to only think the Las Vegas show was any good but Miami, all the way. I have to also give it up for the supporting cast and they are easy on the eyes and well played.

Longmire often turns to close friend and confidant Henry Standing Bear for support as he sets out to rebuild both his personal and professional life, one step at a time. Robert Taylor stars.

Episode Summary:
Long buried family secrets come to the surface after a man and his horses are killed in a barn fire.

I skipped an episode of this show as I was not all that into that Amish plot. This one was good as a man torches his barn and fakes his own death to get insurance money. What I like about this episode is what it reveals about the skills and character of Sherriff Longmire. There is one horse left alive and Longmire is willing to do whatever it takes and pay the vet to save the horse. What happens and then what is actually happening is not apparent and Longmire figures it out by cleverly following the clues to reveal the true nature of the crime. At the end, he finally has to let the horse go and reads a beautiful poem to him. This was a lovely scene and a sad moment.

First episode of season 5 - we pick up right where last season left off. Tara is just about dead, Sam is being pursued by the pack for killing their alpha ... and more. Not doing a synopsis with these.

I found this episode to be relentless in a good way. The action was non-stop and I was glued to my seat anticipating what would happen next. It really did not stop. I loved it really. I was not all that thrilled with last season of True Blood but this episode totally opened up all these plot points so I have great hopes for this season. We have the Authority, new vamps (Tara for one! OMG) and that old wierdo coming back, the crazy guy (spacing on his name). Anyway...lots happening. And Alcide, my personal favorite as he is so gorgeous. I also have to say I love how they move between story lines so fluidly here and without pause. Viewers are taken on a sugary journey as four of America's premier pastry chefs compete each week in three unique elimination challenges judged by Ben-Israel himself. Each round tests their ability to create magical and inventive desserts, while being given an inspiration, surprise ingredients, and a finite amount of time. The winners from each challenge advance to the final test, with the last chef standing receiving a $10,000 cash

I usually love food competition shows but I find this show annoying. I have not been all that impressed with the skills and creations of the competitors and I find Ben-Israel a little annoying. His critiques are interesting but his manner is well, off-putting. He needs to be a little more sympathetic.

I don't really like the structure of the show either and that they can be thrown a second "must use" ingredient while they are in the middle of their creation. I think they should be given all the ingredients at once so they can really plan their work - I think then, the quality of what they produce might be raised.

Anyways. Not impressed by this show and the final work has looked a little sloppy to me. Nothing that I would want to eat anyway. Guess that is good. I don't need to be eating dessert anyway. :P

Burn Notice (2007 - now)

Summary: (from IMDB)
A spy recently disavowed by the U.S. government uses his Special Ops training to help others in trouble.

Michael Weston is a "burned" spy - he is down and out and down on his luck. But he has skills and smarts. This is the basic premise of this almost Robin Hood plot premise. He helps people with their problems and takes really tough cases that no one else will take. I am home sick today and watching the marathon on USA.

What is truly great about this show is the structure of it. Throughout each episode is this voice over narration by Weston - a kind of how to be a spy thing with tips and tricks on how spies operate. Very factual, kind of like a spy manual. I really love this aspect of the show and an example of this is - he describes what kind of tie to use as a fuse to ignite a fuel source...wool ties and polyester not so good but silk ties work best as a real fuse to ignite a gas tank. These are the kind of gems that are dotted through the episodes and are pretty interesting. His voice is monotone as if he is reading it. Nice touch on this. They consistently do this. Then you have to love Fiona, the Irish pyromaniac and demolitions expert and Sam, his friend and co-conspirator. Sharon Gless (formerly Cagney in Cagney and Lacey) appears as Sharen Westen, his Mom and she gets caught up in the plots at times.

This is a really good show with lots of action and some really good plots. Some stand alones and some multiple episode story lines. Good solid spy stuff with a sense of humor.

So this series is back but with the next generation of Ewings. We have rival cousins who might love the same girl and have competing interests in SouthFork ranch. We also still have the older generation, Bobby and JR Ewing still at each other too. Lots of conniving and maneuvering as everyone has an angle on the scene. Good stuff. There is an interesting plot on this oil drilling vs alternative energy thing going on. I found that kind of cool of them to modernize the show with that in there. Made it relevant. The good cousin is into alternative energy - yay!

I love the opening montage and how it evokes the original series - the music and the pictures. That was really good and a tribute to the first series. This is true nighttime soap opera. I heart this show. I record it each week on my DVR just in case I forget to watch it. Don't want to miss it. It is not always the funniest thing there but I love the in between scene music and I am a big fan of Kat Dennings (of Thor fame and other Indie movies). I do admit that some of the jokes on this show fall a little flat and it tries too hard to be a "sitcom" but I will tune in each week to see Garrett Morris (the old timer from SNL) dispense words of wisdom.

This was a promising opener to a series. Subtle clues give us some key insights into Sheriff Longmire's character - scars on his back in the shower, the tea box in his kitchen repeatedly shown, he reluctantly goes for the coffee. He is a complex man, recently widowed and coming out of a depression due to grief. You can see how effective he is at his job though - his keen attention to detail, reading the signs of nature to track to the body and a real concern for the people in his territory. He really cares about what he is doing and it matters to him. You get the feeling he is coming back into after having been sleep walking for some time but he will get it.

I really enjoyed the layers of interactions - the upstart deputy gunning for his job, the rookie girl complaining about things all the time, his native american friend whose advice saves his life ... really good stuff here and enough to keep me interested. And oh by the way, they rescued the girl out of prostitution and solved the murder. Longmire gets his man.
