So I went to Los Angeles for last weekend - it was a two-fer. My brother had gotten a teaching award at UCLA and I wanted to go to the awards ceremony - and we got to celebrate my birthday. So that is the two for one special - actually three in one as my parents came in and I got to visit with them too. We did lots of fun things and had a grand time. Here is the run down -

-awards ceremony at UCLA Chancellor's House - Friday
-mani-pedi's for the three girls - Saturday
-dinner at The Strand House, Manhattan Beach - Saturday
-visit the science museum, Imax of Hubble Telescope and visit the space shuttle Endeavor - Sunday
-concert by Bruce Brubaker, pianist at the LA County Museum - playing Phillip Glass selections - Sunday

It also was important to touch base with my parents. My mom is 77 and my dad is 84. They are getting up there and doing well but seems like age is settling in. My dad went to see a great audiologist in LA and got new hearing aids. This is a huge thing as his old hearing aids were not working very well at all and were pretty run down. I notice my mom is stumbling around a lot and she wears these platform shoes 2-3 inches there. I have to figure out how to tell her and get her to wear flats. She is really unsteady on her feet and she took a fall in her house earlier in the year. I am worried about her falling again. So what do I do? I am trying to figure out how to broach the subject and handle this without hurting her feelings. If anyone has any ideas - feel free to comment.

Anyhoo. This is the stuff I am dealing with. Work is very very busy. I don't hardly get to breathe when I am there. Just too busy and getting busier.

So that is all I have. Thanks to everyone who left me birthday messages. It was amazing! *hugs to all*

Hope all is well with you and yours there.
phyncke: (Happy Birthday)
Oy vey. I am turning 50 this week and I don't feel old but forces conspire to make me feel old. The AARP is sending me membership letters and such. I am feeling great but if I keep getting these mailings - I will be old before my time. It is ridiculous. Offers for term life insurance and other ridiculousness. How do I get off these mailing lists?!

I am doing well. I am going to Los Angeles this week to see my family. My parents will be in town and I will get my annual visit with them done so that I don't have to travel during the holidays and my brother has won and award at UCLA so we are celebrating that. Along with my 50th birthday. Wootles. It is such a milestone. I am doing fine with it really. Half a century. Wowie Maui.

Happy birthday to me!

Hey hey there. I am posting in. Not much doing today. I spent the day watching DVR shows (Extant and Dallas) and going food shopping. I am going out to the movies tonight (November Man - I have no idea). So that is all I got. I got my copy of Captain America - Winter Soldier this week - yays! Watched that already.

Work is going well but no one likes my new supervisor there. I am staying away from the negativity and waiting until she settles in more. She has only been there since Aug 1. People need more time to get acclimated. So I am in wait and see mode.

I am going to start writing again. I have a WIP that I want to get going on and it is pretty good. I just opened it and read it. The pairing is Fingolfin-Thranduil. Yeah. Fingolfin is reborn to Mirkwood. It has humor and Legolas greatly admires Fingolfin and there is a mentorship thing that happens there. So lots of good elements. I really miss writing and think I need to get back into it. I have six - seven chapters of this thing going so quite a lot to it.

I also have dreams of writing an original fic.

So right now I am reading/listening to a few fics. I am reading Iron Druid Chronicles, listening to Mary Poppins and reading a dragon story of Temeraire (forget the title - the second one). Lots doing in literature - if a bit unfocused. I am enjoying reading a bunch of stuff at once. Kind of fun doing whatever I want there. I do listen and read things. Oh wait - I just started Outlander too! Ha!

My parents are doing so well right now. They love their new house though they are still unpacking. And this just confirms that the move was the right move. They have some improvements to make to the house but will do those in good time. I am so relieved. Yes!

So that is all for me right now. Doing well. I hope all is well with you on your end. My birthday comes up in October so I have to figure out what I am doing there. Low key fun with friends. Etc.

Have a great weekend!

PS - I put up my traditional fall layout. Click in to see.

I just wanted to take a moment to thank everyone here for the birthday wishes and greetings - messages, v-gifts and banners. I definitely felt the love on my birthday. It is always such a thrill to check LJ on my birthday and read all the messages that people leave. Thank you! Thank you!

Here is the birthday report - I took the day off and did just what I wanted. I relaxed over endless cups of coffee. Went to Bakesale Betty's for my favorite sandwich and cookie. Took a long and glorious three-hour nap in the afternoon and then opened some gifts in the evening. Not all that exciting but it was just what I wanted to do. I have one more celebration with friends coming up this weekend so woot.

Cheers to you and have a great day!

I cannot think of a clever subject line so I am going without one. My brain won't function that way. I am heading into my birthday week and I am determined to be good to myself. I have birthday plans for both weekends as my big day falls on Tuesday. I am taking my birthday off from work and it looks to be a nice cool day that day so I might just lounge or I might go get a massage at the spa. Not sure yet - I am still formulating a plan. My goal is to be good to myself.

Work is better- I had my review and that went well. I got 'exceeds' expectations in a a lot of categories that matter to me. Some things I can work on but all in all I am doing well. That is good. I feel more motivated after the review so I guess it was a positive experience. Not a downer. Bonus.

Teddy got a whole box full of cat toys this week. I will share a pic here of him with all of those later. Too tired to do the whole upload thing right now. He is a happy cat. Totally spoiled.

I am just chilling. Hope you are having a good night. Cheers.

So none of my well laid plans came to fruition. I slept and napped my way through my birthday. Watched some recorded shows on the TV and went out to a nice dinner. I did just what I wanted to do which is what I think one should do on one's birthday. Yes indeed.

I want to thank everyone on my flist who wrote me a post and sent me birthday wishes.

Thank you to the following for the v-gifts: ardisia and heyurs!

It really is stunning to read LJ and see all the greetings and graphics and messages from everyone. I tried to comment on all the posts and will get to any that I missed.

Thank you!

On the debate...
So I watched Face the Nation today and my conclusion is that it is easy to win a debate when you are not truthful and play fast and loose with the facts. Yes, Obama was off but Romney lied. So he gets to call it a win when he out and out lied to the American public there? Go figure. Even the political commentary admits, he lied but he still wins the debate. I don't get it but this is America. That is how it goes. The debate did not change anything for me. My vote still goes the right way. There are more opportunities coming up and I hope that Americans are smarter than Romney thinks they are. I really do. The moderation, much as I like Jim Lehrer, was not strong enough to keep them on format and really was bad. He got totally rolled over and could not keep them contained. Neither candidate respected the rules of that debate.

In other news - I am doing a mini-spa day - getting a mani-pedi and my hair done. Boy do I need this. My grey is showing and I am looking forward to some pampering of me. Yay.

That is all I have. I am looking forward to Monday off for my birthday. I might chuck all my plans and relax - not sure yet. I will see. Tonight is a movie night - I think we are going to see End of Watch - which could be disturbing.

Anyhoo. Cheers to you!

I just saw that on the TV. Cool. Lots to smile about - got my raise and promotion. Birthday. Smiley. I am a little tired but can still summon a smile here. So get your smile on and smiley there.

SMILE!

Thank you [livejournal.com profile] mommabear for the bright and cheerful birthday card. I got that yesterday and it made me smile! :)

So sports fans - my birthday is coming up on Monday and to that end and in the interest of having a good one I am going the following:

-taking that day off from work! Woot.
-sleeping late and having many cups of coffee
-getting a chiropractic massage - ultrasonic blah de blah. Feels very good and is covered on my insurance
-getting my retro-active pay to my bank account
-taking myself out to lunch to a good restaurant
-may go to a movie in the afternoon and have a cupcake at my fave bakery
-turning off my phone. ha!
-I might chuck some of this and go for a hike and be healthy

This is the plan. My mom bought me a flannel nighty which I picked out on the Vermont Country Store web site, my dad is getting me a movie card for the AMC Theaters, I asked my brothers for gift cards. I love gift cards or amazon gift certs. I really don't need things anymore as I am trying to minimize clutter in my life. Stuff is not a thing in my life anymore.

The following week I am going to see Argo with friends for a birthday celebration.

Anyhoo. Hippo birdee to me! Yays!

That is the plan. Subject to change but that is the idea. Yeah.

Here is a really hot guy for the Bunday post. I was not going to post today if I could not find a pic but voila, there he was. Hootay.

*Not safe for work!*

Daniel this way... )

Hoochie guy, right?

In other news, I am having a nice relaxing weekend this weekend. I had my birthday movie plans with my friends from work and we usually do movie and dinner for that and it was really nice. They decorated the table at Asquew with birthday flare and went all out. Very fun. We saw Footloose and I will write that review here.

Movie review - Footloose (short)

Story line: 3 years before a group of kids die in a car accident after a dancing party and the town's response is to implement a curfew and a ban on public dancing. New kid move's to town to live with his uncle and finds this hard to deal with and eventually acts to change this.

I found that this movie really was very evocative of the first Footloose film in a very good way with visual quotes and musical memories that brought you back to the first film in a good way. The male lead struck the perfect note of the outsider with heart and I just adored him. It did help that he came in from my home town, Boston and had a really good accent. The female lead was so so and I found her annoying at points but she redeemed well at the end. The finale totally delivered the goods on both the dance and the music. The secondary characters were well done and enjoyable. I really liked this movie and felt it was respectful of the first one and as an updated version did well. There were some hip hop dance scenes, cowboy line dancing and the music updates were well done. I think if you liked Footloose the original, you will like this one. So go see it or get it on DVD. Good fun -- lighthearted, entertaining and fun. Props to Dennis Quaid as the earnest, albeit misguided preacher - a good portrayal there.

My co-workers gave me the gift of cash today, cold hard cash! I am going to take that and go get a much needed massage. I am having a recurrence of neck and shoulder pain so I really could use this right now. I was really touched by the gift and card they gave me today for my birthday though I have a feeling it all got lost in the office for a few days.

No worries though and I am truly grateful for their thoughtfulness!
